HI, Basically I just need to polish/eliminate sharp edges on little single layer pieces. My usual single layer fire goes up to 1400 w/ a 5 minute soak. I was thinking to use only the side element,, it would add heat up time but might give me a more even result. Only the ones nearest the edge would b...

Yep, I use a square pan that has side that are about 1 1/2 inch to 2 inch tall. I put a piece of wood in there to put the glass/stone on. That way it supports the back of the glass while keeping you from drilling through the pan. Of course if your doing small pieces you don't need anything as big as...

If you have a drill press that is best. I use core drills from Crystalite corp. and a water bath for drilling stone and glass. The bur life product is fine for jobs that won't generate a lot of heat. If your piece is over a mm or two thick the heat will start to affect the drill and the glass. You'l...

multi-layer shelves

HI, Does anyone have any experience stacking shelves in the Evenheat "coffin"? I need to fire polish 15 pounds of 10 mm square thin bullseye pieces. If I put a layer directly on the bottom (using fiber paper) and then a layer of kiln shelves above that, I figure I can get 4 cut up sheets i...

HI, I did a little checking and I still haven't found anyone with 24" discs.. most of the units being produced now are free abrasive types.. You can find the Lapidary Journal at; http://www.lapidaryjournal.com I didn't see anyone in the resource center w/ them that big either. I'll do some look...

HI, I've been a lapidary longer than a glass worker.. Silicon Carbide is a fine choice for glass... I use both Diamond and SC.. Diamond for all the rock work I do. The expense is not necessary for occasional glass grinding. Diamond, requires more water, but is cleaner. SC grinding tends to need a li...

For interesting "clear" I use BE iridized/pattern clear as a back (IRID down) and then top with Dichro with the coated side down.

Gives lots' of interesting plays of light.

Pot Drops / Kilns?

Which kiln(s) are y'all using for your pot drops? I've got my workhorse evenheat "coffin" but it's not very deep, I don't have a kiln that's deep enough by the looks of all the great photo's that are being posted. And all the rest of what I have are much smaller. What do YOU recommend? War...

Good points Tim, Most of my work is one off. I have a couple of limited edition designs. My low end is the jewelry bits, which I crank out by the 100's, and what has been paying the bills. Your, right, having a website is a tremendous asset. Mine's been up for a few years now and it's finally starti...

On larger stainless steel bowls I also drill 1 - 3 small holes in the bottom to help venting. Heat the bowls, coat with kiln wash And if I'm laying the glass on top to slump in I also use a layer of thin shelf paper to aid the glass in sliding down. It also makes it easier to move around after the s...

HI, I appreciate the feedback.. Yep,, I'm terrible at self promotion, I am sure everyone hates my work and why on earth would they pay the kind of money I ask for the larger pieces!!!! Even though I know I do good work, and I underprice as it is. Ok.. I'm gonna dust off that CV,, put in a line about...

Re-entering the glass scene

Hello, I've been out of the loop for over 3 years due to illness. Any suggestions on how to update my CV to take this into account? Just say straight out, I've been ill? Most galleries want very current stuff, and as far as paper goes, I just don't have it. I've always been an "outsider" i...

HI,
I make all my molds from very small detailed ones for pendants and components to large platters from RAKU clay (go to your local clay supply outlet and ask for Raku body),, here in SA it's 50lbs for under $17.00

And I get a lot of forms and molds out of that.
