Re: Faulty glass? or faulty user?

Hiya Thanks Tony, sorry trying to be quick before my laptop battery dies. Its 222C to 677C with a 30 min hold. Then 333C to 777C with a 6min hold. Regards Tracey that would be 400 dph to 1250F, hold 30 and then 600 dph to 1430 F, hold 6 So a couple of thoughts... If your base was one layer thick yo...

Re: Schedule assistance - piece is in the kiln

Thanks, Bert. With the 50 dph ramp up, I was thinking that would pretty much take care of the squeeze with the hold to help finish. I can drop that to 1200. The components really are varying heights from 1/4" to 5/8" to 1". Toni Toni, with the 50 dph ramp you don't need a bubble sque...

Re: How will BE White react with Egyptian Blue?

0013 is a strong saturated white opal without any of the reactive oxides. 0113 Is plain old white. It shouldn't be reacting with anything. 0313 is a strong saturated white opal with lead. According to the BE chart, it can react with selenium and sulfur bearing glasses. That is certainly borne out by...

Re: Reduction Frit

I have been able to get a reduction atmosphere in my kiln without burning anything more than the organics many people use routinely in their kilns. While I never tried the reduction frits, I silver fume glass all of the time. There are only three glasses in this piece - black, vanilla, and gray. The...

Your schedules may also be a problem with the sticking. Try soaking longer at a lower temperature to achieve the same effect with less sticking.

Re: removing kiln paper from bottom of fused pieces?

Sarah, I assumed you were in the UK. Those temps are farenheit. Is your kiln Farenheit or Celcius? This is where you get to start experimenting. Fiber paper will leave your glass textured and sort of matte looking. Sometimes the side you use makes a difference. You may be able to get the look you wa...

Re: A huge bubble

looks like you have the dichro between a layer of black and clear. If so, that's why you are trapping so much air.

Re: Large Bubbles

In the first firing with the single layer if you are getting any dogboning that may be why you are trapping air in the second firing. Read here in the archives about bubble squeeze schedules (I've written about them countless times). You need to slow way down between 1050 and 1250 if you want the ai...

Re: Crack in finished bowl

I have seen cracks show up long after firing Lynne. They weren't always clearly compatibility cracks. Sometimes the piece just needs a little stress for the cracks to start. Like the stress of sitting in the sun a few hours a day. The annealing schedule looks okay, but a typical compatibility crack ...

Re: hundreds of tiny bubbles appeared while kiln-carving -- why?

That looks exacltly like the spongeing or pitting that sometimes happens, particularly (but not exclusively)with silver irrid that has been fired shelf down more than once. I have yet to find a way to rescue those pieces. I am so sorry.

Thanks, Tony & Ronny... I will defintely add the extra step at 1500 to prevent craters. Meanwhile.. Q: Can I refire to smooth the small craters? If so, would I full fuse with top cratered surface UP or, flip and fire with top DOWN at 1500? Or, what? I would full fuse with the top cratered surfa...

Re: removing kiln paper from bottom of fused pieces?

Welcome Sarah! Sounds like it is mullite. Judging from the looks of Laser's kilns I'd guess they come with mullite shelves. Is it heavy? If so, then it is and, yes, you can use kiln wash. But be warned, all kiln washes are not alike. If you use kiln wash made for ceramics you may find that it sticks...

If you want your glass to be flat at a full fuse, you have to fire at least two full thickness pieces of glass (not thin). Glass wants to be a quarter of an inch thick. If you give it less than a quarter of an inch to work with, it will pull in and up to a quarter inch, and you are likely to get som...
