Re: coil resistance

I don't see glowing from the lowest coils, however they do get hot enough to scorch paper when first heating. I usually don't try the paper check at temps over 250.

coil resistance

I've been having troubles with my kiln not completing cycles I've used successfully for years. It appears that the kiln will not reach temps. on ramp up in the timeframe programed. I have changed the relays and thermocouple to no avail. So I am now thinking that the coils may be the cause. This kiln...

Re: Advice on buying a new 120V kiln :(

I was having the same problem (although a different kiln/controller manufacturer) and it turned out to be a relay. Bought the replacement for $13.50 plus shipping. Age is not a good way to evaluate electronic components. Number of cycles and component heat has much more relevance. From the Paragon s...

Re: Venting my studio

Not sure what the conditions are where you live but there is a pretty consistent breeze here in New Mexico that is enough to drive my vent enough to at least remove the excessive heat from my kiln. It probably wouldn't be enough to pull powders from the room though. Wind driven and almost silent, ea...

Re: Best Wet Band Sander

I've used this type for that sort of work and it works well. http://www.homedepot.com/p/Makita-5-in-Disc-Sander-GV5010/202312074. You can get any glass shop that works with C. R. Laurence products to order self stick disks for you. One of these is best to have also CRL 5" Backup Pads for Stick-...

Re: Best Wet Band Sander

How much grinding are you intending to do? There is a pretty good bench top model available made by Gryphon. If all your doing is cleaning up edges and taking sharp corners off that can be done with a regular belt sander or even a disk sander with the correct type of belt or disk with a coating of F...

Re: Tile Saw Modifications

I worked for many years in the glass fabrication business as both a factory trained technician and as the owner of a glass company. Glass cutting using a tile saw is actually glass grinding as opposed to glass cutting. Two factors make all the difference in successful glass "cutting" using...

gold foil

I just completed a project that included gold foil. I found a really good source for American made gold foil and they turned out to be very easy to work with and the prices seemed reasonable too. They also sell silver foil and leaf. www.wbgoldleaf.com I dealt directly with them and they were great.

Re: Water off Belize

This was done on a full piece of Tekta with all the colors placed on top. Colors were done with frit and powders in 3 firings to create depth. Clear pieces were then tack fused to maintain the soft texture. A final tack fuse was used for the white "foam". Thanks for the kind words.

Re: SOFA Chicago

We were lucky enough to have Sofa visit Santa Fe for a couple of years and I really miss it's presence here. Maybe I can get to one of it's other locations someday.

decals

I'm in Santa Fe, NM now and have been asked about making Day of the Dead style pendants. I've seen photos of some very nice colored skull decals applied to fused glass but I can't find anything other than black or white. Anyone know where I can find the "Sugar Skull" decals in color? Thank...
