Re: Tempered glass on float glass - rainbows?

I know this is an old post, but I think those rainbows you're seeing are just the pixels of your screen being magnified/distorted by the edges of the tempered glass pieces.

Re: French Vanilla Woes

French Vanilla is one of those weirdly wonderful colors that forms layers of color when the sheets are made, which is what causes that lighter outline you're looking for. I don't think the lighter squares are overfired, I'm wondering if they're perhaps from a different sheet, or the opposite side of...

Re: Any idea what went wrong?

Did you have a piece of shelf paper in the bottom of the mold as per her instructions?

Re: Why is this cracking?

I also would like to know were that weird schedule came from. The odd numbers make me wonder if it was translated from F to C, and maybe incorrectly.

Re: Why is this cracking?

S/he said the glass did not fuse together, you're still looking at separate sheets of glass, so not incompatibility. Simple thermal shock from ramping too fast. That is not what a thermal shock crack looks like. They say the glass didn't fuse together, the top temp was only about 1200 F. And from t...

Re: Peacock texture mold

I meant a picture of the failed piece, it's often very helpful. Anyhow 1470 would be too hot in my kilns. I'm away from home so I don't have my notes to tell you what my top temp is for texture molds, but I'll post back after I get home next week.

Re: Peacock texture mold

Texture molds don't typically have holes. How many layers of glass did you use? Without knowing your schedule I might suggest firing slower and/or cooler. Post both your firing schedule and a picture for better help.

Re: Devit on draped bowls

I'm a little unclear on if you are fusing your blank first and then draping, or are you trying to do it all in one step. I would fuse the blank first, and then drape. Then as already mentioned there is no reason for a bubble squeeze during the drape firing. And yes if you try to heat cold glass with...

Are you sure it was fused and not torch worked? There are small casting molds available that may give you the look you're after.

Re: Does this fusing mold need air holes?

I seem to recall that not so long ago, maybe a couple of months? , the someone posted here with a pic of this mold and glass with bubbles. The person had followed the instructions but it still bubbled up. The general consensus was that even though the instructions say no problem to fuse/slump all i...

Re: Safety relating to thin fire kiln shelf paper

If you are wearing gloves when removing the used Thinfire, I wouldn't think your contact dermatitis would be from the dust. It may actually be from the gloves as mentioned previously. I am an RN, and I used to get a similar thing on the backs of my hands. I thought I was developing a latex sensitivi...

Re: firing a new mold

huh. if the mold has been bisque fired. (those have) then it has been fired to above 1472. i can see no reason why doing like they said would do anything to the ceramic 'interior structures' or whatever. i just see no science behind that statement. cynthia m, you got a clue i am missing? r. Re: Just how warm will my kiln room get?

How high is the ceiling? I have high ceilings in my basement and there is no noticeable temperature difference a few feet away from the kiln even if I open it to crash cool. Keep in mind that's kind of hard on the kiln, and is not really necessary unless you need to stop a slump or something.

Re: Can you clean glass jewelry in an ultrasonic cleaner?

I've used the aluminum foil, baking soda & hot water trick on sterling silver jewelry for years. I haven't and don't think I would use it on my glued on bails. I have a silver polishing cloth I use for those, only takes a couple seconds on each one.

I did that Bullseye project you're talking about, and it came out great! No problems with my kiln afterwards. I've even fired silver clay in my kiln with no problem. Go for it, you are going to love it.

Was the glass completely cooled before you washed it, or was it still warm? What was your firing schedule?
