Making a Vitrigraph Kiln

Does anyone know if it is possible to turn my small Satellite J-100 jewelry kiln into a vitrigraph kiln? The top part is the interior of the kiln and the narrower bottom part is pretty empty and houses the element ends traveling to the temperature dial.
Thanks!

Re: Achieve "Food-Safe" with Over Glaze?

Thank you Bert. I went to the warm glass store and saw a 2 ounce "Mixing Flux" under Ferro Sunshine. Is this the product I am looking for?

Re: Achieve "Food-Safe" with Over Glaze?

You guys rock!!! :-2q(-_-)p Thanks for your help on this. How does Ferro Flux 3269 differ from the Ferro Flux you are recommending? Where do I order Ferro Flux 10 117? I don't know where Brad's store-front is.... On a related note, how is everyone periodically testing your fused dinnerware for food-...

Achieve "Food-Safe" with Over Glaze?

Hi All,
When fusing glass that contains Lead or Cadmium, will it be rendered "Food-Safe" with the addition of a coating of Super Spray or Clear Coat on top? Is an Iridized glass food-safe after fusing?
Thanks in advance!

Re: 1/8 Inch Fiber Paper

Thank you for your input! Bert, I have also purchased a Paragon Fusion 10 that has a fiber lid and I like it very much. My goal is to still be able to use my Paragon Ovation (Large Oval Kiln) for my big glass projects. I've done all of the remedies (vacuum lid before every firing, used the lid seala...

Re: 1/8 Inch Fiber Paper

Fiber paper is a terrible choice. It is held together with an organic binder. After this binder burns off, it is completely weak and useless. You can use Chinese 1/2" blanket, which is relatively inexpensive. I have found the Chinese blankets to be acceptable quality. Unifrax makes the thinnes...

Re: Vermiculite board

Why don't you use a heavier gauge of stainless steel sheet to lay over the kiln shelves thereby bridging the gap? Use kiln wash or thin-fire on the SS.

1/8 Inch Fiber Paper

Does anyone know or have an opinion regarding the best brand of 1/8 inch fiber paper? I am looking for the sturdiest and most durable to do some kiln insulation. I hope to get the best brand that will last the longest.
Thanks,

Does FERROSOFERRIC Oxide work also? I guess this is magnetic iron oxide.

Re: Paragon kiln coating or kiln cement OR SOMETHING ELSE

In case it helps anyone, in our self built kiln we ended up placing a stainless steel plate between the brick and the coils. These are wound around ceramic tubes, there was just space enough to fit the plate and bolt it to the bricks. There has to be enough clearance and has to be well secured so t...

Microwave/Dishwasher Safe?

Hi,
I am wondering if iridized and dichroic fused glass pieces are microwave and dishwasher safe. Is the coating on these glasses metalic? Can fused glass pieces hold up to the varied temperatures in the dishwasher?
Thanks!

Ceramic Firing Contaminants?

Hi, I have a Paragon Janus Ovation 10 Multipurpose Kiln that fires from the lid and two upper side elements (for glass) and from the sides only (for ceramics) at the flip of a switch. So far I have used it only for glass. I am considering selling my ceramic kiln and firing clay projects in the Ovati...

Re: sharing my choices of protective clothing for combing

We are planning to use pyrolite compound (a mixture of silica and ceramic fibers and ethynel glycol) used for fixing refractories, to hold the coils up in the channel. Also pins as additional safety measure, embeded in the brick with a coating of the pyrolite, this will hopefully keep them firmly i...

Re: Lower Fire Combing Schedule?

Not sure I understand this. Most people don't dam when they comb. And if they do, then for the glass to run out between the dams you'd probably be hot enough for combing. Most small jewelry kilns heat a lot higher than 1700F; they're also notorious for having inaccurate pyrometers. What kind of kil...

Lower Fire Combing Schedule?

Hi Everyone, I have a small jewelry kiln that I tried to comb pieces in twice. Both times I ruined the kiln elements and shelf because the glass ran out between the dams. It seems that the small kiln could not heat fast enough to reach my target combing temperature (1700 degrees F) and, due t...
