Re: What Happened, and Can I Fix It?

It's hard to pass up the price difference, especially when you're a beginner and experimenting.

Re: What Happened, and Can I Fix It?

Thank you both for your answers. It is indeed a learning process! I did try to refuse this and multiple cracks occurred. I've sucessfully fired many 7" pot melts, but this was the first 12". I did another one yesterday and it broke too - on the way down somewhere between 72 and 80 F. I'm f...

What Happened, and Can I Fix It?

This was a 11.5" X 1/2" thick pot melt. Everything was fine after the initial pot melt. I cold worked the edges and then fired again to smooth and round the edges. When I opened the kilned after the second firing this is what I found: http://www.warmglass.com/phpBB3/download/file.php?mode=...

glass chips to prevent bubbles

I made an 8" X 10" glass painting with fine fit on 1 layer of clear and and am tack fusing it. (It's in the kiln now) For the second firing I want to flip it, top with a sheet of white and full fuse. Since the frit will still have texture I plan to put clear glass chips under the corners s...

how to flatten and fp pot melt

Is there any way to flatten and fire polish the edges of a rectangular pot melt and still maintain crisp corners?

Re: fiber blanket under pot melt?

I just wanted to say that although I knew to use vinegar to clean off the kiln wash, I didn't know to soak the piece in vinegar. Works like a charm!

Re: Compatibility

Thanks, Mary. I'll look at those schedules. The one I'm using came from Laurie Spray, Bonnie Doon Glass. I've used it a lot and have never had trouble with it. I think it something with that particular combination of glasses.

Re: Compatibility

This was the third firing for this piece. 1st firing was the pot melt, which came out 1/4" thick as I had planned but didn't quite spread to fill the form. The 2nd firing I added frit around the edges to fill in the corners, still maintaining 1/4" thickness. The third firing was when the p...

Compatibility

I've read the info on BS about compatibility, and I guess I grasp that on an intellectual level, but how do I apply that to pot melts? I just had one break for no other apparent reason than incompatibility. Can someone please explain this to me?

fiber blanket under pot melt?

I have so much trouble removing kiln wash from the bottom of my pot melts that I was wondering if I could use 1/8" fiber blanket?

Why did this break?

I took this piece out of the kiln this morning, it was room temperature and it looked great. I set it on top of the three plastic cups you see in the photo and was getting ready to add frit to the piece when it spontaneously broke clean down the center. I wasn't even touching it at the time. The gla...

How to fix stupid mistake?

I did something stupid: I tried to do a pot melt into a plate mold. I got the shape I was after, but a small shallow piece of the mold came off with the glass. I would like to salvage this mold, which is a square plate mold, BTW. Can I fill that spot with with a tiny piece of fiber blanket? My other...

Re: cutting circles

One more thing - Does it matter how much bigger the square in which the circle is inscribed is from the circle? In other words, if I'm cutting an 8" circle should the square I cut it from be 8", 9", 10" or bigger? Or maybe it doesn't matter

Re: cutting circles

Barbara, That's so cool about the numbers! I thought it had something to do with the angle of the score. Glad I asked. Are there printed directions for this gizmo anywhere? Thanks for the specific info about hwo to run the score. That makes sense. I am hitting wall with this one though:  cut s...
