Re: Scrap Tekta
@Faye: Do you pot melt it down? Or just stack it on a shelf and let 'er rip? What size (area) stones do you make?

Re: MESH MELT
What we call "chicken wire" around here has very large (+1" ?) apertures, and is made of really skinny wire. Would be interesting to make a direct comparison of the results of using something with such dimensions against a mesh with much smaller apertures and/or a larger wire width:ap...

What are "bubbles" in the context of your cleaning regimen?

@Bert:
OP said they had used a borax solution. Is there any special mixture or application technique for the solution that will encourage the red/copper color?

Re: Uneven bowl slumping
You don't say whether you're leveling the glass before the slump - just the shelf and the mold. You said you had had previous successes - same kiln, shelf, and mold? Same (essentially) layup? Do you think the mold itself be made with a non-uniform slope? Pictures are always helpful. Also, can you gi...

Re: Uneven bowl slumping
Didn't I read here once, long ago, that it might be helpful to bevel the bottom edges of the blank so that it could slip more easily without catching? Or did I just dream that up?
Also: Is the side that catches always in the same position, relative to kiln?

Re: drop vase - strips separating when making blank
I don't have a lot of experience on this, but I'm thinking you'll have a difficult time dropping three layers 10". My guess would be that you'll stretch the blank so thin you'll get holes. I seem to remember a heuristic that says you can drop 1" for the first 2 layers, and then an addition...

Re: Choosing flat lap disks - type and grit
I'll amend my previous post to add that the bowls we were working with had been dropped through a Ceramaguard (sp?) board and the "flaps" had been sawn off. The resulting bowl edges were already semi-flat, semi-smooth, and semi-parallel before we started hand grinding. (Please - no math ma...

Re: Choosing flat lap disks - type and grit
I wholeheartedly second what Cynthia says: We did a lot of grinding in a class I took recently at Hot Glass Houston, and I was amazed at how fast it went. We used three or 4 progressively finer grits, and each took just a few minutes. Cleanup was not all that hard. Only [minor] downside was that it'...

Re: Choosing flat lap disks - type and grit
I found the His Glassworks material to be very helpful. I wouldn't get a 60 grit disk until you know that you really need it. It's very aggressive, and you'll probably find that it produces some chipping where it can't be tolerated. I have one that I got with my initial inventory of disks, and after...

Isn't kitty litter pretty much all bentonite? Look at the product label in some cheap brand and see if that wouldn't work for you.

Re: Is this devit?
The devit that shows in the OP's pictures is in rectangular shapes - or so it seems to old eyes. Is this typical/normal? Or am I perhaps mistaking a reflection of some sort as the devit in question? Here's a screenshot where I've identified what I perceive to be a corner of one of the rectangles: 20...
