smart kiln cam

Have you set up a smart camera so you can see your kiln's digital controller when you're not in your studio? I set up a cheap wifi cam today and can't read the numbers on the display. Maybe they numbers are too bright or maybe the camera isn't high enough resolution...

Got advice?

Re: glass stuck on kiln floor

Wellp, I went ahead and pried before checking for a response here. Pulled out a few gouges about 3/16" deep. Should I maybe try filling it in somehow, maybe with fiber blanket and rigidizer, for the depth of insulation on the kiln floor? It'll probably work ok as is, huh? This is one of the mos...

Re: glass stuck on kiln floor

The tiles are stuck to the floor now. Should I pry them up?

glass stuck on kiln floor

Ooops! I thought that I could fire directly on the floor of my fiber kiln (I like the texture) and now have 3 small (3.5" square) tiles stuck to it. 2 5.25" tiles came out, although one had a little fiber stuck to it. Am I stuck with the glass being stuck? Is it likely to cause problems? (...

Re: is spray A dangerous?

After mulling more clearly about it, Creative Craftsmen should have listed the ingredients on the label and should never have sold a product that contains lead in the first place. That's highly dangerous and irresponsible. I'll avoid buying their products in the future. Boron, huh?

Re: is spray A dangerous?

Thank you! I appreciate the edification. So it's the lead that's the issue, not the boron. I haven't thought about lead poisoning in decades, forgot about it, and am in the generation where lead paint and gasoline were banned so should remember it well. I've been slack about using Spray A carefully....

is spray A dangerous?

After a quick search here and on the internet … well, it's hard to find the right search term … I bring my question to you, glass gurus. I'm pretty sure you're going to get a big laugh out of this. I haven't found posts about Spray A other than how to use it. My bottle jumped out of my hand, leapt u...

Re: Fiber compared to kiln wash

Thank you for this thread. I'm considering buying a new kiln because I'm getting brick dust, which is very frustrating. Based on your input, Brad, I'll be shopping for a fiber kiln.

Re: Kiln element dropping dust

This seems to be a recurring problem with kilns with brick lids. I've never had one so am only guessing that the problem might be addressed by revising the way the element is held in the lid. Recently my brick kiln needed the lid rewired. As this is a home-made kiln we just repeated what was done o...

ideas: cleaning glass & marking molds

Someone has probably either thought of these things & posted or has a reason not to do them :) After trying glass cleaner and alcohol to clean glass, I had an "aha" moment and started using vinegar. (I think someone here suggested soaking glass in it to get the kiln wash out; one thing...

Re: Kiln element dropping dust

It's pretty bad. There are fissures in the lid and one chunk, that's holding in about 1 foot of coil, could easily be pulled off and is likely to fall anyway. The channel is too narrow for me to get wire in crosswise. I've tried patching it some with kiln brick cement but without much success. Some ...

Re: Kiln element dropping dust

Yes, I was wiping the inside with a cloth. But, I just read in the fusedglass.org ebook on Ending Fused Glass Disasters that they recommend using a vacuum very close to the top but without actually touching it. So, that's what I tried yesterday. Hope it helps. Also, I read somewhere that if the bri...

drilling hole chipped irid coating

Thanks in advance for advice. I have a piece of deep royal purple coated with rainbow irid, fused onto clear, about 10.5" x 5". It's been slumped into a tray mold. When I tried dremelling a 2 mm hole, at an angle, through the clear and out the irid face, the irid chipped a bit. Does the co...

Re: Kiln element dropping dust

I have a Skutt Firebox and have been having the same problem--kiln debris and pins falling out. I can't tell if the debris is where the pins fell or not. I have not been able to get the pins back in. My glass dealer recommended that I NOT vacuum the top. Since my Kiln is in the garage I've wondered...

Re: Big bubbles on flat fuse

The solution is pretty straightforward. If you want to never have the problem, you could just fire on fiber paper, but you don't really have to go to that extreme. Just go slower from 1250 to your top temperature and make the top temperature lower. If you fire thicker pieces (such as two or more la...

Re: Kiln element dropping dust

Is the element bulging out of the groove? The new one isn't bulging out; the previous one was. Apparently it was moving around and causing brick dust to drop. The pins fall out very easily. The new lid (a month old) already has pins loosening, with every firing. I replaced the kiln lid, complete wi...

Re: Big bubbles on flat fuse

also check that in all of the re doing of the lid the thermocouple is still in the right position. if it got shoved out, the controller will cause the kiln to over fire. r. Thanks, Rosanna! Will do, right now. bubble on kiln wash seem to appear only if the kiln wash is too thick. I mix 10 to 1 and ...
