Tempered glass

A friend gave me many sheets of tempered glass. I know if you hit it hard or brake off a corner it will explode and I have used the crumbles from this. Now, I am wondering if this great board can give me some ideas of another way to use the glass. She had a store and there are lots of shelves.\ Than...

Re: Mixing liquid enamels with powedrs

Bert: You stated flux is nothing but clear glass. I don't understand...why are the fusing temps different for the various fluxes? I have always looked for one that is compatible with the fusing temps of glass vs. ceramic which is much higher. Also how can the different fluxes be COE compatible with ...

Re: Scratch on final product

soak it in Acetone until loose. Pour the Acetone in a container that you can put a lid on or it will evaporate before it separates the pieces.

non toxic fish tunnels

I am going to be making fish tunnels and wondered if all glass is non toxic. The glass will be single layer and all additions will either be fused or glued on using fish tank silicone. I guess my biggest concern is irr. glass. Georgia

Re: Removing silicone

I soak pieces I have used E-6000 on in acetone in a sealed cool whip or other "free" container so the acetone will not evaporate. Might take an hour or a day.

Re: Cutting curves

Outside curves are the easiest. Label your corners A(top) and B (bottom). Keep your cut as straight at possible starting at A, break off. Cut middle of curve (center of A & B) remembering to stay as straight as possible. Then finish to point B. If glass is hard to break start the break from each...

Re: kit to make wet lap sander

Could someone please explain the firing rates. He lists "120 minutes - 1000f, 20 minutes 1000f, 60 minutes 1450f, 60 minutes 1450f, anneal 4 hrs @ 950f, 4 hrs to 750f, off. I don't understand the first four. Thanks, Georgia

Jen how do you smooth the alumina hydrate? I know it is a powder and even if spread thickly I can't imagine getting it smooth again.Georgia

Steve Immerman: In your tutorial you say you can use hardware cloth, but the zinc coating if toxic. My kiln is in a machine shed and fumes would not be a problem. Would zinc coated hardware cloth be OK to use? Georgia

Re: Wire Melt/Kiln Wash Failure

Have a question. Would it work to use ceramic kiln wash and then top with glass kiln wash? The ceramic can take much hotter heat and should protect your shelves from overruns. Of course I would still use fiber paper. Just something I have been wondering about for a while. Georgia

Re: removal of super glue

I use super glue all the time ot hold pieces together while carrying to the kiln. I have found that soaking in water for 24 to 36 hours will allow seperation. Then a razor blade on the remainder will pop it off. Georgia

The one I have is only about 1/2 as thick as my regular kiln shelves. Is this normal? Do I need to ramp up more slowly? Georgia

Re: Firing crushed bottles...

Scotty: All bottles that look alike are not made out of the same furnace. However you can check on the bottom or bottom sides of the bottle and match the numbers you see there an you will have glass made in the same furnace. There is a catch and a big one: The glass plant is always adding cullet (br...
