Re: Soft fuse with flow?

Thanks for the hints. Based on your comment of using a cake pan it appears it also needs to be dammed. I'll give it a try.

Pot Melt Bubbles and Pits

Is there any way to prevent or get rid of the dozens of small bubbles and pits on the surface of a pot melt? After sandblasting and a second fusing it looks better but the pits are still there.

Re: Too much chipping

My experience is the better the blade the less chipping. Not all blades are created equal.

Re: Disaster! Is this a kiln problem?

The experts were right. Not enough kiln wash. My notes say 8 coats of kiln wash, but my guess is I was distracted with something and picked up the wrong shelf. Thanks for the help. This BB may be one of the best "tools" I have. As Brad mentioned it takes 1700 to do a Bubble Up. Brad origin...

Re: Disaster! Is this a kiln problem?

More kiln wash seems like an easy fix. My notes say I used 8 coats on both firings, but I have been known to be senile. I will try again and see what happens.

Disaster! Is this a kiln problem?

I hope someone has seen this before and can tell me where to look for the problem. Two bubble-up firings. The first is fine and was slumped into a plate. Next was 4 smaller pieces on the same schedule. All have multiple cracks. The cracked one in the lower right is even the same glass. What happened...

Cracked from impurities?

Wondering why the plate cracked? I fused an 8” x 8” plate 2 layers thick and it was great except a small piece of kiln brick was imbedded in the piece. I ground the kiln brick piece out with a diamond bit and put the plate back in the kiln with another piece. It cracked into two pieces with sharp ed...

Bowl drop failure?

4 layers of glass 8 3/4" square over a 6 1/2" square hole in ceramaguard with a drop of 4 1/2". When I peeked at 1300 degrees It had fallen through the hole? First failure I have had. I think I violated some rule of thumb. Too many layers and the glass was too heavy? Not enough glass ...

Bullseye & Uroboros air pollution problems

I ran across this news article on Facebook dated Feb. 14, 2016: "Bullseye Glass, Southeast Portland’s globally renowned supplier of art and architectural glass, altered its production processes this week in response to concerns about the factory’s effect on local air quality. Bullseye has passe...

Re: relays for kilns

Thanks to everyone that contributed to this topic. Now that I am better educated I am wondering if there is a safety problem with some kilns. Namely kilns that are wired with 240 VAC and a DPST relay. My 2 kilns, an Olympic & a Skutt, both use the same DPST relay and the incoming power goes dire...

Re: relays for kilns

Can anyone suggest who might sell a SSR for this kiln (Skutt GM-22-CS). I contacted Skutt and here is the answer I got: "Unfortunately, we don't offer solid state relays for this kiln and don't have a design to put solid state relays on it." Also tried Allied Electronics. No luck. Here ar...

relays for kilns

I need to replace the relays in my Skutt kiln, relay #2139 (25 amp, 12V/240V, single phase). Wondering if there is a better, longer lasting relay out there? I didn't turn anything up with Google.

Re: Skutt Kiln Tip

I'm with you Brad. Why didn't they design it with the elements going side to side? On their web site they even show Patty Grey combing with the lid open. This kiln has a lot going for it but opening during a firing is not one of them.

Skutt Kiln Tip

I have a Skutt Clam Shell kiln, GM 22CS, that is heating unevenly because the heating coils that are in the lid have settled to the back of the kiln. Gravity in action! Probably not the best kiln for firings that require the kiln to be opened during firing. Over time the coils settle to the back of ...

Re: Skutt Clamshell element management

Has anyone tried heating these coils up with a torch and pushing them back to the front of the kiln? They are very accessible by removing the top cover.
