Re: Slumping issues

Why hold (and why there) at all for a simple slump? What's going to happen? My previous "go to" schedule was not far from yours, although I ramped at 300 per. As mentioned, I had issues with certain molds slumping unevenly. Maybe the design of the mold. Who knows, who cares. Frustrating t...

I would hardly call a 20 min hold at 1100 elaborate.

Re: Slumping issues

My slumping schedule is more conservative. I've had issues with uneven slumping and slowed way down. I'll ramp @ 300 per to 1100 and hold for 20 min to ensure an even soak then ramp to 1250 @ 50 per. No issues to date. Also, make sure your kiln and shelf are as level as can be.

Re: Trying to find relay for kiln

If you've never done this before, unplug the kiln before removing the relay to be sure all power is off! Mark the wires so they are re-attached properly. Take a picture, make a drawing... whatever. Just replaced a relay on my Olympic kiln. Called them and had it in a few days. Not outrageously expen...

Re: 11" disc - 12" mold

You could use a circular bubble level to ensure the glass is parallel to your shelf. If the top of your mold is flat and even all the way around, you could put a straight edge across the mold and measure the distance to the glass. Do this at 3 or 4 points around your piece. If your slumping temp is ...

Re: Slumping 2 mil glass

I don't often add my 2 cents for firing questions as there are more knowledgeable people here than me but, from an engineering perspective, I have a couple of thoughts. First, i think draping it would give you the most consistent shape, take less steps and give you a wider range of materials to use....

Re: Kiln paper after it's fired

I keep a 5 gallon bucket of water near my kiln half filled with water. I periodically add to it to keep a level. When i'm done firing, I tilt the shelf over the bucket and usually the whole piece slides off the shelf. Sometimes I have to help it with a plastic spatula. You don't want to scratch your...

Re: Ideas for Easter Egg Fun

Sorry to be dense here, but: What are the 'pre-cut' eggs of which you speak? What do you mean when you say "split them in half?" Thanks! We "pre-cut" the eggs before the kids arrived. 3 mm ovals in various colors. And all the "adornments" were ready at their disposal. ...

Ideas for Easter Egg Fun

A few years ago, my wife and I invited some friends over with kids who seemed bored with the same ole egg dye this time of year. We set up egg decorating stations with pre-cut eggs, split some in half and supplied various cups with frit, stringers, noodles and an assortment of glass bits for decorat...

Re: Glassline Paper - need advice about hold time

Lori, I would anneal at your normal temp. Don't change when you've had success. I use System 96 so everything get annealed at 950. If you use COE 90, anneal at what is recommended for that glass. The paper used in the glassline paper is just thinfire. The "textured" paper is wrinkled thinf...

Re: Glassline Paper - need advice about hold time

The 4 hours@ 1000 seems long but I believe it is for the paper to burn out. Use chads so you don't trap air and gasses during this step. It's been my experience that the manufacturer's schedule is fine for small pieces (refrigerator magnet size), but for large pieces like yours (6.5"), definite...

Thank you Joyce. Thank you tbach. The materials I used were Dichro slide and Decal sheet material. Each piece was cut using Exacto blades and scissors. Change blades often! Some Recent Work To Say Thanks

Every year, my wife and I fish in a tag and release fishing tournament that benefits the The Large Pelagics Research Center (LPRC) to help continue research of Bluefin Tuna's spawning habits, migration habits, growth patterns and general species well-being. The event organizer of many years and Blue...

Re: Mold Storage Ideas

I use bubble wrap (with the small bubbles) folded in half and taped on the edges to create a pouch that is custom sized for each mold. Stack them without worry of scratches. A large roll at an office supply store is fairly inexpensive and I always have some on hand to wrap glass for gift giving.
