Re: Ceramic kiln with manual controls (low, Med, High)

My first kiln was an ancient 8 sided paragon that I got for $50 from a ceramics shop that was closing out. It had 2 Low-Med-Hi switches, and no kiln sitter. To use it for glass, the first step was to BUY A PYROMETER, add 1" stilts below the bottom shelf, and drill a hole to place the pyrometer ...

Re: Decorative plates

Nice Work!! I really like the pot melt on the last one. Isn't it fun when things in the kiln start to work out RIGHT?? When inspiration hits, a person would need a GB4, a room full of kilns (and maybe a fleet of "minions") to fuse it all! Ride the "blast wave" as long as you can....

Re: New Slump MOLD

Leslie,

The "waffle board" base looks like a Great Idea for the mold surface!
From past experience, it can be difficult to get enough stickticity or gripshion on the mold where the rim is at its narrowest.
Where did you get the Waffleboard from?

Re: New Slump MOLD

I don't know if you will have to burn the wax out, as on a form with as much "draft" or clearance as this one, the only thing that will be holding the wax in is likely the toothpicks. If the toothpicks are there to form vents, some one like me would CAREFULLY trim the MM6 on them down to t...

Re: New Slump MOLD

Greetings Les, Would it help if you mist the edges with a plant sprayer as it dries? Might it also help prevent the mold from curling if you turn it over and remove the form so that it can dry from both sides? A temporary support that is cut out to go around the dome (plywood, or maybe an old card t...

Re: Sandblasted, cold worked, want to shine it up

On some of my pieces, I used to "hand lap" the surface after sandblasting, but before final slump firing. The plan was to refine the surface and edges down to a fine "matt" finish before the final firing, as it seemed they would shine up much better at slumping temperature than i...

Re: Polishing Puzzle

I am with Morganica on this one, with a slight twist. Before I built a lapping machine, I used the wet/dry paper, but stuck it onto an arborite counter top section ( the part left over that they cut out for the sink) with temporary adhesive. This comes in a spray can, and is normally used in the aut...

Re: MESH MELT

Greetings Havi. Lovely colours, and flow in your melt. It becomes really fun when the suprises in the kiln are Good Ones. and technique adjusts to make them even more so. While you are inspired, DEFINATELY write and Sketch your ideas down so you can come back to do them justice later. Sometimes the ...

Re: Wearing gloves when cutting glass

The lead hand of small local company we do some specialty welding for brought to the shop today a pair of insulated welding gloves that were covered in woven, welded stainless steel chain maile. He prototyped them on the weekend after we had a conversation about gloves that could be used in the kiln...
