Re: Mold Mix 6 or 7 ????

Jason, you said your glass surface is "lousy". What does this mean? Is there plaster stuck to your casting? What kind of a surface are you trying to achieve, expecting? Are you looking to have the mold surface of the glass as shiny as the air surface? Are your molds open faced? If so, cons...

Cold Zone under kiln shelf?

I currently have my cordelite shelf on 2" kiln posts with a 1" gap between the shelf and the kiln wall. The bottom elements begin just over the top of the shelf. The top elements are 9" from the shelf surface. My problem... I do mostly frit casting in open face refractory molds and ha...

Re: Relief casting mold

Sounds like a cool project. Are you looking to cast just the tree limbs? Your 16yr old photos show what looks like some landscape included with the trees. Assuming just tree limbs. Have you considered KL board? I bought some years ago to experiment with when I was thinking of doing a woodcut type re...

Re: surface problem on casting

Hi Debbie, a few things to keep in mind and focus on while you're reading the archives... How fast does your schedule go thru the devit temp range? 1270 deg F ( conservative low-end of devit range) to 1390 deg F or so (high range?) Since you are casting, the mold provides some insulation so these de...

Re: surface problem on casting

Hi Debbie, that looks like devitrification (also referred to as devit). Search thru the archives and you will find plenty of posts about how and when it is formed and also how to prevent it from forming. Chances are you can address it by changing your firing cycle. Overspray (spray A etc) will not w...

Re: Vermiculite board box moulds.

Hi Haydo, making a coastline map is a really cool idea/project. We are sailors and love the water and love maps and charts. Ive also thought about a similar project but with a different approach. (Your carving skills may be better than mine so vermiculite board may work great for you, not so much fo...

Re: similar group of awesome SG glass people

Hi Joanne, I recently 'discovered' stained glass town square. There seems to be a good mix of gurus and newbies. And certainly a decent archive to read thru. There is also moderate activity, which keeps things interesting. Here's the link... http://stainedglasstownsquare.com/index.php Like you, I ha...

Before and after coldworking

Would anyone be willing to post before and after pics of a casting that has been coldworked? Especially one that has lots of fine detail? I would love to see the difference/progression. I have seen plenty of 'after' pics, but very few 'before'. Even a 'just out of the mold' pic would be great. Cheer...

Why do some colors of glass seem to 'stick' more than others

In my experience, it seems certain colors of glass pick up kiln wash or stick to molds more than others. Can somebody please explain why that might be? I use mostly transparent glass, both BE and Sys96. I realize opal glasses stick more than transparent, which is another interesting question, but I ...

Re: board (?) jewelry casting molds

Hi Mike from Italy, I have been eagerly waiting for someone to answer your question. Although I don't have any direct experience to share, I have been thinking about a possible solution. The first thing I would try is a Cordierite kiln shelf or pizza stone. Inexpensive, easy to find and proven in th...

Re: firing schedule question

Hi KaCe Here's a link to a glue/frit discussion about burning off the glue. It's a start. This project seems like a hybrid of making wafers and the freeze and fuse method. Check out the schedules for those techniques and you might get closer to finding the right schedule for your project. I have nev...

Re: How to make perfect oval cabochons like from Etsy

Cutting your own might be the way to go. Seems like a lot of work when cabs are so inexpensive. What kind of a machine? A ring saw or a lens cutter? Or something else entirely? Do you need your ovals to be perfectly clear? Just thinking that your glass MAY pick up a small amount of texture from your...

Re: How to make perfect oval cabochons like from Etsy

Can you be more specific about which cabochons you mean? There are so many on etsy, some handmade, some mass produced. You mention you don't like the doming, but you may find that even if you make your own in a mold, you will end up with some doming yourself. Tthis is due to the nature of the glass'...

Re: Removing Plaster from Mold

I just re-read your reply. 30 inches is a really big piece. I'm thinking MR-97 might be easier to use than trying to dump the kiln wash back out of your mold. I'm sure you prefer to handle your molds as little as possible. It is an aerosol so the can needs to be sprayed while upright which is one re...

Re: Removing Plaster from Mold

Hi Debbie, My molds are much smaller than yours but here is what works for me... Mix the primer well and pour it into the mold. Swirl it around for a second or two and then dump the primer back into your container. You can re-use this primer again and again. I also use a small artist paintbrush ( we...

Re: Removing Plaster from Mold

I assume you're using some kind of kiln wash as a separator? After doing many tests with all the different brands, Primo is my absolute favorite. Mr97 also works great. As for removing the sticking plaster, have you tried soaking your pieces in CLR? That stuff is amazing and you can use it over and ...
