Re: TO RE-FIRE OR NOT TO RE-FIRE
I am refiring now. Due to the very conservative schedule, I shall be done tomorrow night, or the day after tomorrow morning. I found my polaroid sheets. While transferring the glass - it broke where the crack was [!... :( ] not too surprising. Still checked for incompatibility which was not . No inc...

Yet it is better to check.Brad Walker wrote:I'm almost certain it isn't incompatibility. At least not glass incompatibility.
BTW, the piece is a bit thicker - due to the wafers on it - this is another reason for my being conservative.

Re: TO RE-FIRE OR NOT TO RE-FIRE
Well, for starters if there's a compatibility issue no amount of re-firing will solve the problem. Have you tried to view the piece through polarized film, to see if there are areas of stress? At any rate, the crack does not look like a compatibility crack, it looks closer to an annealing issue. Th...

Re: TO RE-FIRE OR NOT TO RE-FIRE
Brad, I am posting 2 schedules All the temp. and rates are translated from the Centigrade which I use - therefore the 'strange' numbers 1 . the one that came almost complete it was on vermiculite 1", board + thinfire 90 - 1112 - 15min. 599.4 - 1526 - 20 min. skip - 959 - 2:30 hrs. 54 - 752 - 10...

TO RE-FIRE OR NOT TO RE-FIRE
This piece broke on me twice. On the second time, I thought it might have been bad annealing. Broke I mean BRoKE the sheet became 4 pieces. So I fired again, not only a conservative going up, also sitting at process temp 830C 1526F , for 20 minutes [had also some pattern bars that I wanted to add] T...

Re: The kiln works even though I turned it off
Thanks Brad for your advises.
The electrician whom I called, came on Sunday and said to call a kiln electrician.
Dudu came, changed all the 3 relays, and the kiln works!
See what happened next on my newer post
Thanks again,
HaVi

Re: The kiln works even though I turned it off
Great advises, Brad!
Thank you for them!!!
I really had to turn off the electric power of the whole studio. Being that the studio is in my home, I am lucky to have a separate electric system for it.
Many many thanks,
Havi

The kiln works even though I turned it off
I have been firing a project since early in the morning. Luckily I was sitting in the kitchen , not far from my studio, when I heard the kiln yelling....So I understood something was wrong. I am firing at 50C dph [ 90F ] to 600 ][ 1112F ]- - The pip hole was showing a very strong light. As if it was...

Re: firing on vermiculite board vs. mullite boaRd
Thanks Don, I'll be more concrete.... I have a piece that i fired and it broke on me. It broke once, It broke twice..... I suspect that this was bad schedule, bad annealing for sure [ I see the edges] I want to try a third time, and make an effort to do it right. Being that I have both shelves, I wa...

Re: firing on vermiculite board vs. mullite boaRd
Many thanks, Bert for your response. But you have not answered my question..... I own both kinds of shelves, and I know exactly how their surfaces look and how to treat them. Perhaps someone else who reads this might be able to comment more to what I am interested. Suppose both shelves are the same ...

firing on vermiculite board vs. mullite boaRd
Hello Everybody,
I wonder if there is any difference in firing on top of Verm. board vs. Mull. board.
Heat distribution, heat absorption,
susceptibility to thermal shocking....
Anything?
Thanks,
Havi

Re: CaN A PIECE BREAK BECAUSE OF BAD ANNEALING???
BAD NEWS!!!!
I can't believe it, it broke again! almost parallel to the previous break.
I'll post a photo later.
That's it. I am giving up.
Thank you all.
@Don, I do not remember at what temp. I opened the kiln. sorry. I admit that I usually do it, and nothing breaks...

Re: CaN A PIECE BREAK BECAUSE OF BAD ANNEALING???
Thank you All for your responses. As usual I learn from it a lot. It is definitely bad annealing. The piece is still in the kiln, but it is one piece, not two. Looks to me OK . I am glad I thought it might be bad annealing. It did not look thermal shock, and the cracks at the back of the piece did n...

CaN A PIECE BREAK BECAUSE OF BAD ANNEALING???
I guess it can. Can it be fixed in this case? What should I do? Refire to full fusing and sit for how long? A piece on which I had been working for quite a long time - looked ok when I peeped [I should not have done so..... I know. 'speed come from the devil! ] And broke once I took it out...
