Slump and Fire Polish

I have a small order for 25 9"" plates. I'll be using BE's 10" square slumping mold. I made the first plate yesterday and it slumped nicely @ 1170 F, held for 10 minutes. I don't care for the half round full fused edges so I lightly ground the edges flat/square with a #270 disc on my ...

Re: Drop Ring from thick slab

Maybe tack fuse some clear scrap to the outside before the drop? Below and above the disk, give it some help......

And if the chip or anything else wrong is outside the drop ring hole (far enough away not to get pulled into the drop), you can ignore it.

Re: SSR question

I need to upgrade my 220 VAC Oly kiln from mechanical relays to SSRs. It has 3 relays and is on a 60A breaker, rated at 48A I believe. I've replaced the current relays several times and just don't like them being so short lived. I've read this and other posts but am still a bit confused. I thought t...

Thanks Brad, I was afraid that might be the case but wanted to ask in case I had missed something in testing.

BE Dense White (0313) Reaction

Have worked a fair amount using Dense White with French Vanilla and now testing other colors listed to react with Dense White. Oddly enough there appears to be no reaction with Tomato Red, Red Opal, Spring Green or Marigold Yellow. According to BE's "Reactive Potential" chart all 4 of thes...

Re: Glue for fused work

Yes, familiar with the hairspray option and have used it. But this gel/paste works for us with the kids because we can spread it on the tile (with a plastic putty knife), lay it down so the student can place and adjust their design pieces on top. Even without drying it holds the frit, stringer, etc....

Re: Glue for fused work

Raising this old thread from the dead... In the past I used a clear paste for children's workshops that we held off site. Simple projects with accessory glass that was stuck on 2 layer pre-fired tiles (using this paste) and transported back to my shop for firing. I got it from a store that did not l...

Pottery Kiln Wash?

Was asked if kiln wash for pottery would work to coat/protect the bottom of a new glass kiln. (They plan to use kiln wash for glass on shelves, molds, etc)

Have no idea so asking the experts here.......

Thanks

Re: "Dumbing down" of glass art?

Here I sit, waiting for my new shop to be completed. All equipment and material in storage since Feb.... pretty hard thing to deal with. Lurking on this site keeps me energized and motivated, so thanks to all you guys. After 6-7 yrs of focus on kiln formed glass I finally understand and appreciate t...

Re: More Kiln Adventures

Yeah, Brad will tell you I am pretty easily wigged out. I have let this one go without too much stress because the schedules in my logs seem to work just fine with the new controller. Makes me stop and consider what really matters. Lately I've been thinking I need to focus more on intentional design...

Re: More Kiln Adventures

Yep, understand the offset feature and steps to change it. But in reality my previous schedules (100s using the original Bartlett 1000) seem to work just fine with no offset. I may do some more extensive testing later after my new studio is finished and everything comes back out of storage. That may...

Re: More Kiln Adventures

Update on this, the TAP tech rep says that the resting temp displayed is actually the temp of (or around) the controller circuit board. Which is fine I suppose, but explains the delta.

I've used the controller for several months now and really like it.

Re: Fused Glass Sinks

Thanks Dana. I'll probably try one and see how it goes. Besides, I'd probably get a little tired of how one looks after a while so when it gets shocked it'd be fun to come up with a new design .....

Re: Fused Glass Sinks

Yeah, I have one of her instructional DVDs, no real details re: thermal shock. Also found a commercial outfit that sells them for custom homes, no details there either.

Was hoping this group (which I trust a lot), might have some objective data or experience.

Thanks

Fused Glass Sinks

For those of you that have made and installed sinks (assume bathroom use), any experience with a guest or family member that has run very hot water immediately followed by cold water or the reverse? I am considering these for our home but a bit concerned about thermal shock. Seems more likely to occ...

Puzzled....

I work with a local artist that makes kaleidoscopes. She is tired of the stained glass/solder look so for the past several years we have been draping BE glass into 6-8" long arcs (not quite a half circle), which she then glues together for a nice oval tube for her scopes. We also make simple re...

More Kiln Adventures

So I installed an SDS TAP controller on my Olympic GF314ETLC this week and everything seems to be working properly. I especially like the diagnostics, logging and will be enabling Wif-fi with the mobile app next week. However, I am puzzled by the fact that the controller displays a resting temp of 8...
