Re: Paints

Reusche glass stainers' enamels fire at 520ºC to 580ºC. Their colour is intense enough to require only a thin layer that is not affected by the type of glass (and does not affect the glass). As much of the beach glass is bottle glass and so similar to float glass, these temperatures will not affect ...

Re: Attaching a metal rod to Garden Art

Glasscat You don't have to glue the rods into the holes, if you don't want them to permanent. Rosanna, I wouldn't say I love drilling holes, but I have drilled a lot - around a thousand on one project. Core drill bits of good quality, treated well and a quality drill press. I use one made for drilli...

Re: burn treatment

The best burn treatment I have found is fresh aloe vera. I grow (and sometimes kill) a plant in my studio. Upon getting a burn I break a leaf off and smear it over the burn until the burn is less painful. It worked for a burn at 400C - several leaves over an hour and 4 weeks later the callus like sk...

I'll give it a bit longer to ramp up, slow it down and go up to about 1350 for about 20 minutes
I'll respond back once I figure this out.
Why not make a number of observations of the state of the glass from ca 1100F upwards? Then you will see when the glass conforms to your wishes.

Re: Follow in devit question! Help with program please

Hi, Further to my previous post. I am having problems with devit on sky blue and spring green transparant glass, it shows up more on the the green I believe as I back with white which illuminates the glass (and the problem). When I fire on my bubble squeeze program the glass has no bubbles but devi...

Re: which bullseye opals stripe when fired on edge?

As I understand it, Alyssa's question has nothing to do with reactive glasses. It has to do with the tendency of Bullseye's opaque glasses to show a different color on the inside than the outside when turned on edge and fired. For example, strips of French Vanilla can show two colors when fired sid...

Re: how do i charge a firing fee?

My way of calculating the charges for hiring a kiln are: depreciation divided by the average number of firings per year plus opportunity cost (how much time is taken away from you use) plus materials and electricity plus my time. This gets to a break-even price. Any profit you want goes on top. Sou...

Re: Follow in devit question! Help with program please

It has been recommended many times on the list here that when using thinfire, you should vent the kiln to a temperature above the burnout of thinfire, somewhere above 500ºC.
I am fortunate, and do not have that problem, so this is just reporting on others' experience.

Re: Schedule help and other questions.

I took "flattened out too much" as being more than she wanted. Presumably the desire was for a profile or tack fuse. This is why I suggested observation rather than relying on published or others' schedules is necessary.

Re: devit more likely with spring green?

Although I have a tip on preparation of a borax solution http://glasstips.blogspot.co.uk/2009/07/home-made-devitrification-sprays.html I would not recommend the routine use of it. You need to find the cause of the devit and work to prevent it. Use the devit sprays, commercial or home made as a last ...

I don't remember the size of the piece you are firing, but in a top fired rectangular kiln I regularly fire two layer pieces of up to 450 mm dia. at: 200ºC/hr to 677ºC, soak for 30 mins 300ºC/hr to 804 (flat fuse) for 10 mins 9999(AFAP)to 516ºC, 30mins 80ºC to 370ºC, 0 mins 250ºC/hr to 100ºC, 0 off ...

Re: kiln adhesive paper

I hate to rain on anyone's parade, but if there is consistent difficulty in getting the layup into the kiln with out disturbance, maybe the kind of layup needs to be reconsidered. If the pieces are shifting around even with some tackiness, they probably will shift within the kiln too. The glues all ...

Re: devit more likely with spring green?

In my experience Bullseye's 1426 is no more prone to devit than any of the other greens and blues.

Since cleaning is most often a difficulty in creating devit, was the cleaning different between the two?

Re: Schedule help and other questions.

Two comments Thins are more costly for the area than the standard 3mm You need to observe what is happening in the kiln rather than just putting a temperature into the controller. As has been stated, each kiln has different characteristics, so you need to peek into the kiln as it nears the top tempe...
