Re: Drop bowl

The stripcut book is great. There are very few books dedicated to coldworking. Coldingworking without machines is the best practical "how to" book on the subject I've read. The stands book is OK, if you need ideas. But as you say, it is limited in info. It would be on the bottom of my lis...

Re: Wetbelt sander belts breaking

These belts are 41-1/2 x 3. One belt breaking would not be an issue, but every time I replace the belt from my old stash (and these are maybe 4-6 years old), they work for a few minutes then split right at the seam. Yep. Same exact problem. Had to buy new belts. But I cut up the old belts into smal...

Re: Drop bowl

You may want to look at Paul Tarlow's ebook on fused glass vessels (fusedglassbooks.com) - Creative Fused Glass Drop-out Vessels. He provides a lot of good information, including firing schedules and how you can reduce the risk of having pieces drop completely through. Dana, what other books at tha...

Re: Tempered glass on float glass - rainbows?

Yes. I assume by "rainbows" you mean bright white areas of stress, usually around the corners of the pieces that are incompatible. Well, no, they are rainbow-colored. I think you can see them in the photo that I attached if you blow it up. They are just thin bands of rainbow around the ed...

Re: Tempered glass on float glass - rainbows?

Thanks for that Brad and Jim. Appreciate the details on cracks. In case my post wasn't clear.... there are no cracks at all in this piece. Only lines that show where the tempered glass chunks cracked when I deliberately shattered it. I kept those chunks intact in the design and I am glad that the li...

Re: Tempered glass on float glass - rainbows?

Thank you Brad. I'll not waste further time on tempered fused to other glass. The piece isn't actually cracked right now, so I would like to hang onto it just to see what happens. Unless... is this incompatibility the type that could lead to the piece actually exploding later on? Or would it just cr...

Tempered glass on float glass - rainbows?

I've fused tempered glass shards and chunks onto a small (6X8) piece of picture frame glass. It fused well, but when I look at it through my DIY polariscope (glass on top of LED screen, viewing through a polarizing camera filter), I see a very thin band of rainbow right along the edges of each tempe...

Re: Digitry GB-1 controller for sale

I’m curious, how do you program AFAP on these controllers? My understanding is that you don't. You program how long it takes to get from one temperature to another. So there's no as fast as possible. So you have to run tests to figure out how long it takes to drop from process temp to anneal temp, ...

Re: plaster for casting

You’re right of course, Kevin. I should have said, this is sand that was brought in to augment a beach (so, artificially clean). I sifted it, and also I have used it in the kiln under plaster molds, and it fires fine. I did use it today as grog in second layer of a mold, which is now drying in the t...

Re: plaster for casting

Could I use just cleaned/sifted beach sand in the second layer? If not - wondering where to get grogg... Any place that carries pottery supplies should have grog, silica flour, and pottery plaster. Re: calculating weight of glass for potmelts

Dana - I had the same question when taught this (last month at Arrowmont). The reason is that the plaster mold, being dry, quickly sucks up water, so even in the time it takes to pour the water, make sure it's the right level, then pour it out to weigh it, the mold will have absorbed some of the wat...

Notifications

I set my preferences to get notifications on everything, but I’m not getting ANY notifications, either directly on the board or via email. Got one in March, and that was it. (Yep, checked Junk Mail too)

How can I fix this?
