Re: Face Shields for Combing Glass

If it's this kind of gold shield it will reflect most of the infrared radiation and you won't need anything else: https://www.americancrematory.com/product/heat-reflective-face-shield-gold/ Didymium safety glasses will not protect you from infrared radiation, they're made to block UV rays and sodium...

Re: Replacing Glass for peep hole

Replace it with a brick. Kiln brick is soft enough that you could carve to ship and place in the hole where the quartz glass was. If you absolutely have to have the quartz window (not sure why!), there are companies that can cut you a piece to size. Try https://technicalglass.com/product_pages/machi...

Re: The screw on running pliers.

So, how do you set the screw to the correct depth? Set the jaws to the thickness of the glass. Then turn the screw 1/4 turn to tighten just a little bit. You don't need to do it for every single sheet of glass, just for 3mm or 6mm when you change thicknesses. If you're more experienced and can rely...

Re: The screw on running pliers.

Once pressure is applied to the pliers, the glass has to fully break for the screw to come into play. This isn't true. The screw stops the jaws of the pliers from coming together, which controls the amount of pressure applied to the glass. So if the screw stops the jaws from coming together part of...

Re: The screw on running pliers.

The screw should be adjusted to slightly less than the thickness of your glass. That's really critical when cutting thicker pieces of glass. If the screw is all the way down (like most people have it, but shouldn't), then you apply too much pressure to the score and will have more trouble getting a ...

Re: 1/4 inch jaw running pliers

Thank you. Must not be holding my mouth right or need better running pliers. Any suggestions ? I have two. First, you want the distance between the top and bottom of the running pliers to be slightly less than the thickness of your glass. If it's too close together (i.e. all the way closed) you won...

Re: 1/4 inch jaw running pliers

If you want to cut half inch wide strips out of 3mm glass, any running pliers will do the trick.

Re: Paragon Pearl 22 - where are the feet located?

There should be four rubber feet at the bottom corners of the kiln. The front ones are just inside the panel that juts out. For my Pearl 22's -- and at one time I had five of them -- I didn't buy the overpriced stand from Paragon. I built my own stands out of plywood and 2 x 4's. Yes, plywood. Never...

Re: Cracking during slump

Is the piece conforming to the mold or is it still flat? Is the piece split in two (or three) or just cracked down the middle? Curved crack? Can't tell from the photos, since they're just partial pics. Round bowl mold? (Have the BE number?) Was the mold on the shelf or just on posts? How close are y...

Re: Cracking during slump

Got a photo of the break?

I'm a bit puzzled by your comment that the edges cracked and were not sharp. If your top temperature was only 1200F, then that shouldn't be hot enough to round the edges.

Also, a description of the mold you used would help.

Re: Schedule for slumping large piece, 9mm thick?

That schedule would probably work. For over stainless I usually watch the piece and just hold until it's done the way you want it, however long that takes. 75 on the way up is conservative, but justifiable on a piece that large. I assume you're not really close to the top elements. Bullseye would sa...

Re: firepolish for Pressed Glass

Generally I sandblast then fire to around 1350 to 1375F with a short hold. At that temperature it shines but It doesn't really roll the edges. Would probably work ok if you didn't sandblast, but sandblasting gives you a better finish. For powder on top you would need to go higher to get the powder t...

Always the clear Uro with BE, no problems. Sometimes the other colors. Only problem I ever experienced was with one of the Uroboros reds. Not surprising since reds can be difficult to make.

I would imagine Richard Whiteley knows him. I know that Brock once told me he had slept on Graham's couch, so he must have known him as well. As for me, I have spoken to Graham several times on the telephone, back in the early 1990's, trying to get permission to print his book in the US. They were b...

Re: Heat resistant Tape

That makes sense, just not sure why it would be better than fiber paper.

Most high temperature tape that I'm aware of is only rated to 500F, but might hold up longer insulated by glass. Google high temperature tape.
