Re: Death of an Organization

I'm off to the AGM of the BC Glass Arts Association tonight. AGM? Association of Glass Melters? Artists Giving Money? Or maybe Angry Group of Men? Apathetic Gang of Munchkins? Or is it Ants Go Marching? (Hurrah! Hurrah!) And I assume BC stands for Beyond Caring. ....... Hate to see the organization...

Well, I am actually not fusing on it. What I am planning on doing is using it to get a fused piece flat that my warped fiber shelf distorted a bit. So I am just taking a 1/2" 14x14 piece up to 1170 for 20 minutes. Do you think that would be ok on the unfired shelf? I think it would be fine. As...

It's not critical on small work, although I have seen shelf/air bubbles in as small an area as 50 sq. inches. Got one the other day on a piece that was 3 1/2 inches square. That's 12.25 square inches. And the shelf had been fired once before. I didn't think that was possible. Just for the record, i...

You're right, it's definitely an alloy with copper, just trying to figure out how what I need to mix with the copper to make some sheets of it.

Have you tried posting on a jewelry/metalsmithing board? Artists who work in Japanese metal blends like mokume gane could probably advise you ... also about milling the sheets to desired thickness. Good idea about posting on a metalsmithing board, I'll try that. This isn't an isue of milling, as fa...

Yeah, I've got a bunch of leaf, it fires a gorgeous blue (now why does something called variegated red fire to blue????) By the way, I'm also playing with variegated green and variegated black -- they are similar, except less vivid blue and more black. I suspect the black is aluminum, and would imag...

Variegated red

Anyone know exactly what combination of metals makes up variegated red? I know there's copper in there, but what else?

Foil will work much better than leaf. Unless you use several layers of the leaf, it won't show up very well and will just be wasted. Brock's suggestion about oil is a good one -- I use mineral oil, but any light oil will work. Also, since gold is so expensive you might practice with silver instead -...

How about the abrasive reclaimer that they suggest for between the cabinet and the dust collector? Any experience with that? (Catalog prices are $875 for the collector and $169 for the reclaimer.) Why are there 2 'u's in vacuum? Marty, I have a used reclaimer (TP catalog number #6120-40) -- if it w...

I suspect he means 550-J (not 55-J). This is a standard grade fiber paper that is widely available. It will work fine on the kiln shelf. The difference between 550-J and 110-J is that the 110 is rigid and the 550 is flexible. The 110 will last longer than the 550 (about 25 to 50 firings, vs. 6 to 12...

Cheap silver alloys often yellow, but there are lots of metal screens that would fuse fine between two pieces of glass, including copper and aluminum. (Yes, aluminum melts at 1200F, but an aluminum screen will usually stay intact when fused in between two layers.) I wouldn't use galvanized steel, as...

Skamol has two warehouses in the USA, one in Portland, Oregon and one in Charlotte, North Carolina. To buy from them, you need to buy a case, which is anywhere from 72 to 144 boards, depending on the thickness. The material comes from Denmark, so it can be out of stock from time to time. (For exampl...

Yes. It's a frequent technique. Foils, wires, and very thin sheets work best. You can use copper, silver, gold, aluminum, brass, and many other metals. The main thing is not to use metal that's too thick.

No, don't do it. That twechniqhue is for cutting laminated glass, to burn out the laminate between the layers. Brock What's a "twechniqhue"? Must be a Canadian thing. (P.S. You can also use kerosene and a string to cut bottles in half. This could be why most of the oldtimers are dead.)
