Re: Fiber Kiln

I'm doing more teaching and would like a lightweight kiln to take to different towns. I've looked at the Jen-Ken fiber kiln. Anyone have any experience with fiber kilns? Any other suggestions? My only suggestion would be to stay away from the Olympic 'Traveler.' I bought one lightly-used and found ...

Re: Frit Maker

Does anyone have experience with this tool? http://www.bluefiremolds.com/frit-maker/Glass-Eater.php I find myself wasting a lot of time lately making small batches of quenched and fritted glass. Could use a shortcut. The best frit maker I've used so far is a 1X8 inch piece of galvanized pipe with a...

Re: 'OTHER' MEANS OF POLISHING GLASS

No-one has yet asked the question of professional pride and honesty. My spectacles have plastic lenses, but I can't imagine me making plastic glass art. Even partly. In some works I use glue for sure. Then I make it look like glued. To put a laquer on a matte surface? Not for me. If I can't polish ...

Re: Uneven bowl slumping

I am tempted to take it to my lap wheel and grind the top edge until it is nearly even all around, As I am now experimenting with cold finishing processes, coldworking the top edge is exactly what occurred to me; but why not take the processing further to fully polish the top edge and skip the addi...

Re: Go and stop and go? Or just go?

More holds====more wear on the controller and relays===more replacement, maintenance? Just a suspicious person. Detroit found out what 'built-in obsolescence' did to their products' reputations; I don't think kiln makers would benefit from that strategy. I'm thinkin' those holds will prevent user b...

Re: Go and stop and go? Or just go?

I've noticed that many of the firing schedules that are in the canned programs, as well as some published schedules (such as the slumping schedule recommended by System 96), call for a ten to fifteen minute hold on the way up through the initial heating range. Usually the hold is around 500F, but c...

Re: Do touching pieces fuse together or might there be a gap

So, I'm looking to make a plate with this design on it: http://www.badgerband.com/store/accessories/band_w_decal.jpg I don't have access to any saws and just have glass cutters. I'm not sure if this is even possible but.... Would it work to make the outer "U" shape in 3 straight sections,...

Re: Time to purchase small wet belt sander - need your input

Check out the Covingtons on the link below, these are nice small units. I have a bigger unit now but I had a Gryphon table top and would recommend you stay away from Gryphon, I had problems from day one, service sucked and they never took care of their problem. I have talked to many other fusers wh...

Re: Go and stop and go? Or just go?

As always, I'm consulting Graham Stone's Firing Schedules for Glass/The Kiln Companion and find his discussion on pages 98-99 of a 'Catch-up Schedule' where the schedule has holds at F250 and F500 in the heating phase. He specifies that the schedule is designed to compensate as suggested earlier in ...
