Re: Paragon Kiln Repair

Paragon customer service is an oxymoron.
Call Duralite and get new elements and quartz tubing to suspend them in (within which to suspend them?).
PM me if you want more.

Re: Studio Flooring

Concrete, honed but not polished (look up the grades of finishing concrete, I went for the last one before polish), and don't bother staining it. On top of that, perforated interlocking rubber 3'x3' floor mats. Home Depot's got them. You'll be able to re-configure them, take them outside to hose dow...

Re: Help- Deposit refund to customer?

Bonnie- You should have terms WRITTEN out for when the word "commission" is first mentioned. For example, come to the studio and chat for free. I come to your house and consult for travel expenses and time (taken off the cost of the commission, if you want). 50% deposit to start. Cancellat...

Re: Drilling holes in stone

If you have a drill you can get diamond bits (try HIS Glassworks). Either submerge the stone in water or build up a dam around the hole for water (clay, playdough, duck tape etc.). It's easier than drilling glass- use light pressure and raise the bit every few seconds to clear the swarf out of the h...

Re: Drop Ring from thick slab

I've weighted the glass down on top of the ring with uneven success but haven't tried anything as thick as this.

To sort or to distribute? I'd start with a grading sieve. More distance from the work will give evenosity ™ (Brian B).

Re: cremains pieces

i know you're looking for business advice (check out Milon Townsend's books for that) and not an emotional reaction but all I can think of is "ick". A lot of glass blowers have been dealing with that (dead people's ashes, not "ick")- it can be lucrative. Is Wendy Rosen's Art Busi...

Aaron- Do your own homework- get Henry Halem's book, Ed Schmidt's too. Go visit glass shops and offer to compensate anyone who will spend time with you.

Talk to the stone workers near you. Glass is close enough to granite in hardness. You want the tools that everyone else is using (for supplies and repairs).

I find that the thinfire, once the binder burns out, is too powdery to keep the glass from flowing through it down to the vermiculite and sticking.

Re: TaoFiber - Fiber Paper

Sharol- I've been using the fiberfrax 970 equivalent in 1/32" for years. It's expensive- about $2/sq.ft. in 2'x160' rolls. I'm curious about the cost of "your" stuff. The 970 has a very faint weave on the front, a little rougher on the back but is the smoothest paper (once you get pas...

Re: Digitry GB-1 controller for sale

Glad this post came up . . don't think I would care for this system. I like thinking in terms of the safe speed limit on a particular stretch of heating and the destination - speed kills. I don't need to know how long it will take to get there unless I will be needed for firing intervention suck as...

Re: Digitry GB-1 controller for sale

It's the same programming as those "other" devices but seen from the time side. You enter elapsed time from start and then your target temp for that segment. One of my typical schedules reads 4:00 (hours:minutes), 1100 (temp F) 4:30, 1100 (30 minute hold) 5:00, 1470 5:15, 1475 (15 minute h...
