Re: making cabochon with coin inclusion?

I've tried all US coins, old and new. Fizzy blobs of nothing. May have gone stupidly high - it was years ago and I have no interest in it now. Many coins might work if they didn't have the zinc(melts at 787f.) and tin(449f.) in them - plus alloys frequently have lower melting points than any of the ...

Re: Microcrystalline Wax

OP - you want hard micro-crystalline. Don't accidentally buy white/amber - soft and flexible. Hard is sometimes referred to as jewelers wax.

Re: How to Tell Good Art from Bad?

A good read is "The Principles of Art" by R.G. Collingwood who wrote this in 1923 but still has a lot of relevance to this subject today. I found the Google preview interesting that I might buy a copy - Abebooks.com, $3.47. Oh dear, what floral language - I'll have to keep the dictionary ...

Re: Terrible luck ordering shelves

Update - the Ceramic Shop http://www.theceramicshop.com has simply stopped communicating with me. Niiiiiiiiiice. It would cost me more in gas to drive to the largest pottery shop near me and it might just be a wasted trip, than what the difference between these and one from BE would be. I'll ...

Re: Terrible luck ordering shelves

Thanks Brad. Just looked. Hmm, for the "flattest shelves possible"(BE's words), it would be worth the extra $15-20 on a 15" square if it spares us the coldwork on just one piece that is transparent, where the work is glaringly obvious until the final stages. I think our best sh...

Re: Kiln Relays

The idea behind moving the entire controller is to get the power handling components away from the kiln heat and retain the enclosure. If you didn't do that, you would need to have a separate enclosure for the SSRs. Tony I totally agree that moving the whole thing would be optimal. However, then yo...

Terrible luck ordering shelves

This is a new problem for me after 12+ shelves. I order some from one place - 15" shelf has a depression about 1 mm deep, in about a 4" swath running from side to side. Other side has blobs of clay on it and squiggles and scratched in the face probably 1 mm deep. Ditto (squigly/scratches) ...

Re: credit where credit is due

WHen I worked for a bronze sculptor he allowed all who worked on it to sign(basically scratch) our names on a surface where it wasn't readily seen - usually this was the underside where it would never be seen unless taken off of it's plinth. My hands (big bass player paws) were cast and attached to ...

Re: How to Tell Good Art from Bad?

It is not that confusing. Art should immediately impress and have an emotional recall. What is this good art, art is art, it its not art it is craft or crap Here in Australia a $100,000 prize was given for a ridiculous sculpture becaue it had a philosophic title. Without the title it would be seen ...

Re: Suicide, along with all other hot topics.

We each hold on to our life with such tenacity, it is horrifying when someone throws it away. Mental illnesses, brain tumors, or substances issues can all be culprits. Those left behind are always left with painful questions. I am sorry for your loss, Haydo. I can only second that, makes me too f'n...

My first kiln. Caldera, dial temperature meter. Not the big one they have now - like maybe a 2"(5 cm.) square. LOL. Yeap, timer. Sometimes the phone rang or nature called. Glass died a fiery death.

Re: spray kiln shelf

Haike brushes. They seem a bit over-rated imo. Most are just natural bristle stuck into pieces of bamboo which are then glued together - meaning the bristles are in bundles. How is that supposed to effectuate a smooth finish? I've found good quality bristle paint brushes and even some cheaper natura...

Re: photo copying on to glass

I'll add that different brands are vastly different quality. DOn't waste your money on "World of Paper" brand - will fall to shred before you even get a fingernail sized piece off. "Papilio" is some of the best imo - they have several different grades. A light hand polishing with...

Re: Sandblast Resist

Plasti-Dip - found at almost any hardware. MAde for coating your plier handles and such. I've done blasting using anything from duct tape to sticker material. If it is rubbery the particles bounce. If it's hard it gets etched. https://www.walmart.com/ip/Plasti-Dip-Spray-Black-11203-6/21015329?wmlspa...

Re: Sandblaster Question

I have to ditto 3 - it's not like sandblasting imbeds anything into your glass. However, if you do crackle technique you would not want to use that dirty media - it is very hard to get "crap" out from under some of the edges of the crackle. I don't sandblast crackle items any more, even th...

Top Loader?- save your knuckles

I keep seeing the scraped knuckles complaints. This. Use rubber coated wire - haven't dropped one yet. Easy to steer past the thermocouple - left hand up, right hand down(steering) Worsk on round or octagon too()due to the rubber coating on the wire) - just keep your hands over the darn circle Louis...

Re: Kiln paper after it's fired

I rarely handle spent thin fire. HEPA vacuum with it's exhaust pointed at one of the exhaust blower inlets. Spent fiber cloth goes in garbage(gently), then is sprayed good with water. I spray some water into the garbage can every time I go in our work area - that's what plastic liners are for. I got...

Re: Kiln Relays

You can create a panel with solid state relays, one for each zone, a controller (many controllers will operate up to 3 zones with the same profile), and if you want a female plug outlet sized for your kiln (or hard wires) You will need to extend the thermocouple wires from the controller over to th...
