Re: What does it matter?

You sound like a bunch of evangelical fundamentalist preachers that are more concerned with saving other's soul than with saving their own. Gotta disagree, Jim. I think our souls are all in the same boat. What does it matter if someone wants a to buy a kiln so they can make a sink. They'll either m...

Lani, where did you see this dog ad? On this board, of course. I live here. The first time I saw it was the day Brad posted the notice about Skutt coming on as a new sponsor (March 1, 2002) I followed the link and ended up in a pile of cute where Jim Matthews was proclaiming the joys of his ...

Phil, send me your mailing address and I'll have some of the new ThinFire sent out to you. I think that our tests have shown it to shrink less than 2%. But you should try it yourself. Lani

Cynthia.... please don't apologize. I didn't feel attacked. It just seems that sometimes it's difficult here to stress the need for quality, accuracy and higher artistic aspirations without being thought of as "not user friendly" ... hobbyists deserve the best. I believe that, Bullseye bel...

What Bullseye has to offer meets the criteria for a different audience than those that are offering a more user friendly option . Cynthia, I don't think that misinformation is user friendly. Leading someone to believe that they can push a button and make a plate isn't offering a service. It's conni...

[Perhaps participants could provide reviews of classes they have taken.]

Tony, I've seen rave reviews for really bad classes (full of technical misinformation, but "fun"). How does the beginning student know what they're not getting?

No answers, just questions. L

Re: It's the studio's job

I want to agree and disagree with Jim Wolverton. "Beginning students don't need Klaus Moje and the class would likely be a total failure." - JM Ironically, some Moje’s teaching method involves doing just what this thread is about: copying technique. Moje introduces students to kilnformin...

Here is an artilcle about a glass maker who uses intentional knock offs to create something new and interesting. He is the only glass maker to be included in the Whitney Biennial so he has serious "art cred." http://www.nytimes.com/2003/04/11/arts/design/11SMIT.html?ex=1051323061&ei=1...

Re: Curious about kiln wash

What specifically happens to kiln wash during full fuse processing that renders it unsuitable, or at least of questionable value, as a separator for subsequent firings? Cliff Cliff, I’m not sure if anyone here (BE) truly understands the mechanics of how kiln wash works, but this is what we *think...

Re the price of the UL approved BE hardware: we spent many months trying to get fixtures designed, and UL approved and manufactured at a lower price. We’re still trying to come up with something cheaper. The price simply represents the cost of small run manufacturing in the US that is UL approved....

Lisa, Sorry! Bummer. I agree with Tony on this one. It looks like a classic case of thermal shock on the way up. The center portion of the base glass is heavily insulated by the thick pattern bars while the outer edges are exposed to the heat from both top and side elements. Two simple remedies (Iâ€...

Andrew, I assume that you are slumping with the same surface up (the clear cap) as was up in the fuse cycle, yes? What is the shape of your slumping mold? Does it have steep walls? Is it possible that as the fused blank drops into the mold it is sliding down the mold surface, disturbing the shelf pr...

Leslie, have you tested your kiln for the evenness of heating/cooling?

If your elements aren’t distributing heat evenly (any burned out? bunched up?, drafts in the firing chamber?), slowing down the annealing schedule can actually make it worse.

I agree with Cynthia (mostly)

Lead (and Back Magic has lots) will react with sulfur to make lead sulfide (black/brown). Many amber colored glasses contain sulfur (called “carbon/sulfur ambersâ€
