Bert,
I tired the 20/80 receipe for relief moulds in frit casting..

Perfect release BUT as the cullets/ frit melted down,
they pushed some perimer ahead, giving a slightly
patterned look. With fine grit this is not really visible,
with cullets there remains a map.

Under a blank it must be OK.

Brian keeps reminding that devit occurs only within a narrow temp zone. Hot enough that the atoms can arrange to crystal lattice, coll enough that the movement of glass prevents formation of solid crystals. My understanding is that a pot casting is very safe, because the glass is in movement all the...

Plasticine

After thinking overnight I remembered one more caveat. If you take the final mould from plasticine, please note that plasticine is oil based. Some of this oil may seep into your mould. It is better to burn the oil residue out before casting. If you are frit casting, nad ramp up slowly I expect the o...

Bentonite is one, CMC is another.
The difference is that CMC burns out and gasses,
bentonite stays in the mix, but may stick to the glass if
used too much.

Splash coat

Small moulds can be made by pouring into a box. That can be done in one stage. Sometimes it is not practical, but the mould is built up around the piece. The process starts by splashing wet plaster over the original. The purpose is to provide an inner surface to the mould without bubbles or voids. S...

Plasticine clay, plaster and waterbased clay do not stick to each other. Im nodeling I work in waterbased clay. If I need a partitioned mould, I build the wall of plasticine. over the clay piece. Then I cast the first side, remove the wall, add release soap to the seam and cast the second part. Hard...

As a newbie, it feel terrible to challence an authority: Okay, it's in his Glass Myths section, and reads: 5. Glasscutting is easier with a specific fluid (usually petroleum based) applied to the glass This one is mostly true: but it is not so much the type of fluid as it's molecular size. Many liqu...

Kiln sitter seems like a reliable safety device. My kiln has two set of relays serially. This is an European requirement. One set is operated by the controller, the other set is triggered by - door switch, cutting off if the kiln is opened -if the thermocouple detects a temperature 20 deg C over the...

Kiln elecricity

I have a separate meter for my kiln, and keep track of the consumption. My kiln is rated at 10 kW. A frit cast session of reasonably thin piece takes about 20 to 28 hours. Simple math says I am consuming 200 to 280 kWh. The meter says I have used only 24 to 35 kWh. Read this so that my kiln is ON on...

Bert, what didi you reallyask about freezing. When you buy it dry, as a powder od dust, it does not freeze. After adding the water it is different. The water will freeze at some point, forming crystals. Does it leave the alumina out to settle after thawing? (Some people here distill denaturated alco...

Wikipedia

I know the wikipedia, though I have no hands on experience on it. It was in my mind to put the dictionary in it. As Brad mentioned, 100 persons editing the draft may cause more confusion. maybe when we have something stabilized... The greatest worry is forth and back editing. We have already argumen...
