Re: Removing silicone

Had the same problem on a flat piece. Put it in the kiln, took it to 800F and slow cool. Burned off the silicon completely.

Re: acid polishing

Totally agree with what everyone has said about hydrofluoric acid. Can not say enough not to use this stuff. There is no room for error on the personal protection equipment.

Re: Failing Silicone: another option?

I always buy a new tube of GE silicon II, open it and lay down a bead on a scrap. Let the bead cure for 6 hours. If it is not hard, I throw the silicon away.

Re: Safety relating to thin fire kiln shelf paper

Keep kiln closed when binders are burning off. Greg, Kevin had just mentioned in his post to vent the kiln when the Thin Fire is burning. His reasons made sense (for a newbie) as much as yours. I guess the jury is still out on that one too? Lucie Your choice. I like to keep the smell contained.

Re: Safety relating to thin fire kiln shelf paper

Main ingredients in Thin Fire Paper are Cellulose, Aluminum Hydroxide, fiber glass, organic binders. It is predominately a nuisance dust and an irritant. Regarding the Fiber glass – the jury is out on toxicology but would be a good idea to wear a P95 respirators (cheaper than P100, less breathing re...

Re: A skin rush because of grinding the glass ???

Ground glass is chemically inert. There is nothing there chemically or biologically which would induce a contact dermatitis (which is what I think you have). It can cause skin abrasion assuming it was rubbed vigorously into the skin. Were you working with some other chemical that day? If you want to...

New Studio/New Glass

SL-FB-1.jpg
After a year I decided that my studio was not working - too small. So, I bought a new house with a HUGE garage. Plenty of room to work now! The front door has sidelights, so I made something. It's called "Sunset over Battery Creek."

The trick to avoiding the irritating effects of Thin Fire binder burn off during firing is arranging to be somewhere else when it occurs!

A woman bought a $500 bowl from me and asked if she could put it in the dishwasher. My response was "Would you put your Picasso through the carwash?" She got the message.

Re: Glass dust everywhere!

Glass dust is not especially dangerous. It is considered to be a nuisance dust by OSHA. Glass dust is not silica, it is a non-crystalline silicate and does not cause silicosis. See my web site for more information. Use your ShopVac to clean up the mess. http://www.gregorieglass.com Click on Glass Ar...

From a health perspective, crystalline silica is nasty stuff. If you are going to use it dry keep the dust down and wear a P100 respirator.

I bought bifold closet doors at Lowes. You will have to weight them and secure them at the top, but they work well and look great.
