Re: At My Wits End
I love making pot melts, but every once and a while one would break on me or I would get some crazing in the surface. If I tried to re-fuse it , it would usually crack in half before I got to 500°. I used to fire in an old ceramic kiln with a manual controller. (A knob that went from 1 thru 10) I ...

Re: Tec Help on Big Kiln
Aloha All, Just fired up Black Bertha for the second time. First fire was 75 dph to 1500 to steam out the mizu table. 42 hour up and down. Second fire was to 1375 to fuse to stick some glass. Problem: Third ramp was 960 to 75 in 4 hours. Actual time to 75 was 27 hours. Not much good for daily produ...

Paul Yes, Artista is hard; lower temps, whilst full fusing, leave the surface of the individual pieces raised; even at 830C they look like shiny wine gums - almost good enough to eat - or is that too good to eat? I tried some more test pieces using two colours of BE irridescent, both irridescent si...

Re: help with cerium oxide polishing
This is the first time I have tried to polish with cerium oxide. My kiln wash left some ugly spots when slumping and so I did not want to re-fire to polish. I thought I would try by hand. I am using a dremel with a felt pad. I let it "charge" overnight. Then I used a fairly wet paste of t...

Re: S'plain this one Lucy
I have two fused test pieces. The first is a combination of BE 1120 (yellow transparent) and BE 1401 (crystal clear). The second is a combination BE 1114 (BE royal blue transparent) and BE 1401 (crystal clear). In both pieces the clear acts to "thin out" the color density. When I hold the...

glass devits. it's not the atmosphere (which gets replaced every time you open the lid) or anything to do with the kiln. use an anti-devit spray and it should go away. search the archives for any number of solutions that can be used. In adittion I vent the kiln till about 700 C This gets rid of any...

Re: Speaking of grinders....
Does anyone have/use/own an 8" disc mini-grinder (or any other for that matter) from His glass works? Are you satisfied with its performance and the customer service there? I'm looking to upgrade from my Inland disc unit (only 5", too small to do bracelet bars without falling off the edge...

Re: Begging letter
Add this to the Nigerian dictator's wife's appeal for help. I got a letter from a Kristi Radford of Cleveland MS who asks for a "donation of any sort for my silent auction" and goes on to mention (with tortured syntax and spelling mistakes) a "trust fund" she'd like to set up fo...

Re: Novice Needs Help On Devertification
Please bare with me, everyone had to start somewhere and I'm just starting. 1) My wife slumped a piece last night and the gloss is looking dull and has a rough feeling. Is this what you consider devertification? 2) If so, I have read that you can use the Borax mixture to prevent this. When do you s...

Re: What temp to firepolish?
I was wondering what temperature you guys take the kiln to in order to properly firepolish a piece. I make mostly fused glass cabs for use in my wire wrapped jewelry. Will firepolishing restore a piece that has cracked, and needs to be re-fired? If not, then at what temp should I try and "heal...

Re: I've got blisters on me fingers
I have worn the fingers out of my Zetex gloves through the outer weave but not all the way through the lining. Is there anything I can wrap the fingers with to get a bit more use out of them? Fireproof tape or something race car drivers or stunt men use? Thank you Hari Georgeson for the title of th...
