Re: Shipping large piece-best way?

Sorry that I never did finish this thread! I did end up working with a UPS shipper.. who carefully used a wooden support and a box within a box, with alot of either foam or peanuts, I don't recall right now. But the wooden structure he built, I believe, held it in tact safely..and the glass arrived ...

Re: Insurance responsibility at exhibit?

Re:the exhibit; since it is not a gallery, but a venue that is showing my work and helping me with visibility, yes, I should carry my own insurance. It is only $25 /mo. to get the rider. Re; shipping, I had a nightmare incident with UPS, and 35 sq. ft of art glass was broken. UPS packed it horribly ...

Re: Insurance responsibility at exhibit?

If I am following this correctly, sounds like the insurance was the right way to go in that instance, but you undervalued the piece.

Insurance responsibility at exhibit?

My work will be on exhibit at a professional club (business, meetings, events, etc). They tell me that my work has to be covered by me, not them, while on display. Since glass is breakable, this is disconcerting. I do have business insurance, but need to get a rider for this. I would think that any f...

When is safe to blast?

When is it safe to blast the back of a piece that has just finished cooling to room temp? Is it at risk to bast, i.e. in 2 hours ?

thanks!

casting in pyramid mold

first time casting- I am casting in a pyramid mold, about 3" high and 3" wide at base. Using system 96. Will use bits and pieces of glass. They do not have a schedule for a deep mold. I assume I will get lots of bubbles, and run the risk of breakage if it is not annealed properly. Have any...

Re: Shipping large piece-best way?

I know I got lucky this time, Marty. Very lucky. Going forward, with large flat work, I want to crate in wood, and will preface this with clients. I am alittle more trusting of the shipping slumped, smaller work with UPS, as per my experience. I do wonder if it ever got near a fork, as they were mov...

Re: Shipping large piece-best way?

I have now re-created the glass and shipped it again. When I re-fired the piece, I went to 1410 and held 15 min. The piece was double boxed, and the outer cardboard box was lined in wood. It was highly insured, which probably kept UPS handlers on their toes. The box had up arrows to show how it shou...

Re: Polarizing film- annealing- results

I called the manuf. and they said it they are all compatible. ( But I am not sure I trust that.) FYI - the glass is clear..it looks grey due to color of film. I have used these colors together many, many times without issues. but lately have had less luck. I think it is annealing issues. I would lik...

Re: Polarizing film- annealing- results

Lani's info was excellent- thanks.. and very valuable to me was "Chips that exceed this extreme level of stress will actually break out of the bar – at which point the stress is relieved by cracking and no halo will be visible. " I am not seeing much halo now in my glass that had cracked e...

Re: Polarizing film- annealing- results

Now I know what to look for, and I do see a slight 'haze' over some areas..I understand that is stress. Not sure how much I need to worry about it.. (?)

Polarizing film- annealing- results

Good morning. I bought polarizing film from Bullseye.. and held it at right angles to see annealing results on 2' x 3' fused glass. All I see is dark and clear..not hazy, not colored .. I imagine this is good news, but I would appreciate hearing from those that use polarizing film, to see if this me...

Re: Shipping large piece-best way?

I agree about timing- the longer, and more hands are involved in the shipping..the more issues can arise. Re: boxes... The pieces I am sending are longer than the boxes I have gotten from the glass manuf. If I do crate it myself, the shipper most probably won't insure. So, I would have to find a rel...

Re: Continuing cracks- large glass! Why?

part of my motivation is to see if the new shelf set up and schedule works..then if that piece cracks again, I wouldn't mourn it as much. If a new large piece does crack that I worked on for 10 days, it would be a sad day. But I do have a question about the idea of cutting an re-using the 2 pieces w...

Re: Continuing cracks- large glass! Why?

Last question… I will try to repair my broken piece. The crack right up the middle. I will fuse the 2 sides together. Is it better to fuse the crack together uncovered, or cover with a clear piece? I want to disguise the crack as much a possible (not sure I can), and wonder if the crack is more visi...

Re: Continuing cracks- large glass! Why?

Some. I think the bottom line might be: my thermocouple was the older, exposed tip kind. It was not registering temp correctly anymore. So, earlier fuses worked. Lately, I was annealing too long at a hotter temp than I should have been due to this. Bert did suggest this earlier..and I hope that was ...

Re: Continuing cracks- large glass! Why?

I read this on Bullseye website... in answer to a question posted re: breakage.. " it could be (most probably) that your kiln isn't even in heat across the entire span, making annealing of wide projects impossible. if this is true, then longer anneal times actually work against you, as they fre...
