Cynthia, I have used Sprite as a medium for BE powders lots of times, however, I don't know how or if it would work with frit because it isn't even as sticky as klyr fire and may not hold large frit well. But I have had great success with the powders and Sprite, I really like the long working time a...

What I do to make frit is put my glass in the oven at 550 F, leave it a bit, and throw it into a metal pot of cold water. Sometimes it can use a little further breaking up but it's a cinch at that point. Search the archives for making frit if you are inclined to make your own in this pinch, there ar...

Arrowsprings, nice folks, very helpful. Stringers are round, like you know stringers to be, noodles are flat and look like fettuccini pasta noodles. I don't know about the milli maker dimensions.

Slim pickings here in NC, too. Our agent said we had three options, one covers emergency room care only...yikes. The other two are Blue Cross which I have, and Fortis, which my husband has, we too are both glass/self employed. My Blue Cross coverage is decent but pricey, my husband's Fortis is super...

100% agreement about Portland's Thai food! When I woved away from Portland about ten years ago I couldn't get it off my mind, and never have found any so good anywhere else. Also some great Vietnamese food, Saigon Thin Than (I think) on congress across from the State Street Theater is my favorite re...

The Gryphon is awful. We have had endless problems and have found it to be very poorly made. I have not tried the Taurus and would still recommend it over the Gryphon, it MUST be better. In all fairness I must say we have done a lot with it, but it's been falling apart since three days after we boug...

We just did our first show in June and the three biggest things we really, and I underscore really, shouldn't have forgotten were: 1) trash bags/bin 2) BAGS FOR CUSTOMERS (boy was that awkward) 3) a good money system, it was not very professional to be digging through my pants pockets to make change...

First good thing to know is that it is pretty hard to ruin a piece with cerium oxide as it is pretty gentle, though effective. 1 & 2) One to one seems a bit thick, maybe two-three water to 1 powder, I've heard the analogy of whole milk or half and half, but at this point I just kind-a wing it. 3...

Kelly, I think how you use the cerium oxide is dependent on your equipment, are you using a wet disc grinder/polisher? If so you will need to get a felt or cork disk that fits your machine. You then 'charge' the disc with a paste made from the power and water, work that paste into the surface, let i...

I always throw them right into a little tub of water until I wash them with a scrubby sponge, but I will try the wet sandpaper. What grit do you use? Also, I have had less of a problem with scum now that I use a finer grinder head, we had a very coarse head on there for a while, lot of scum even wit...

Perfect, I am going to Michael's tomorrow, how nice to know the Badger is fine, we find most every time we need any equipment the price makes us gasp! Unfortunately all of my edges have been ground, I'll have to see if the 'scum' is a problem, I plan to paint super spray on the ground edges before f...

Super Spray and airbrush questions

Sorry, lots of questions all at once... Most importantly, I would like to get an airbrush to apply super spray as a top coat, which airbrushes do you recommend for this and what features should I look for? I saw in an earlier post that super spray need only be used in the hottest firing, I will be t...

I had a chocolate shop for years and I made and sold truffles which were then displayed in trays, each clearly labled with the flavor of the truffle, I had about 15 different flavors and a couple of times each day customers would come in and ask what EVERY flavor was. It was increadible. New employe...

I fired a piece for full fuse on kilnwashed fiber board. The wash and board stuck terribly, though I managed to scrape most of it off, there was kilnwash left in the tiny impressions from the surface of the fiberboard and there was no getting it out of there. I read the tip to soak the piece in whit...

Hi Alex, What I do, size permitting, is set my kitchen oven to 500, put the mold in from at the start (I put something under it like an old cookie sheet for ease of maneuvering), let the oven preheat and then hang out for ten minutes or so at 500, then I slide the pan out and brush on my kiln wash. ...

Thanks! Cynthia, that's just what I decided to do, I am going to break it into two firings. Also, in order for the powder design not to distort I need to have the piece at least 1/4" thick for the fuse firing, so in the end the pieces will be three sheets thick rather than just two and will tak...

I have been fooling around with the world of powders (bullseye) and the other day I did a fire of little test tiles with powders used in all sorts of ways. I used different bonding mediums, different colored sheet glasses, various methods of application and removal, and also played with fusing with ...
