Re: Kiln-Formed Glass in Venice

Just got back from a business trip to Venice. Good food, good wine and LOTS of lousy glass! I've been to Venice a few times, and I agree most of the fused stuff is not only poor but in incredibly bad taste. Spotting some moderately tasteful plates in a window a couple of years ago, I ventured into ...

Bullseye sample set - how reliable is COE?

Anyone tried fusing bits of their Bullseye fusing sample set?
The disclaimer says the samples are not tested for fusing (the colours representing the post-fuse colour of the real stuff) - but I'm tempted to use the thin bits and keep the thick ones for colour reference.
Is it worth the risk?

Re: Dirty glass from Murano - anyone know what it is called?

I just got a free box of broken glass from a company that imports blown, colored lamp globes from Italy. All of it has dirt in the glass as if it had been thrown in the batch before it was blown. I was told that this was intentional technique and actually popular among lighting customers. Anyway, I...

Drilling

I use a cordless Dremel 7800 in a stand, with diamond bits. Works a treat. I chose cordless 'cos I keep the bit under water and mains electric wouldn't be safe. The bit tips don't last very long (maybe 10 holes in 6mm BE fused glass) - though after a small hole is drilled I sometimes widen them usin...

Is a big, non-flexible, hunk-a-glass really something you want to put around peoples necks? (This question is not intended to spark political conversation! ) If they wanna buy them then I'm willing to sell them. The pieces I've made so far aren't exactly 'hunks', and aren't very heavy. I've ...

simpler solution

Thanks for all the info on mould making - I've since found that the reverse of the gently sloping rim of of a large round platter (about 40cm wide x 3cm deep) gives a good enough curve to the glass.

Or maybe I've just got an odd shaped body...

Looking for body mould

Last year, while firing a batch of 'normal' cab type jewellery, I had a bit of spare shelf space and a heap of scrap.. and I put together a sort of 'neckpiece', (about 5 x 2 inches) which I've been wearing a lot. Needless to say this random creation got more 'oohs and ahs' than anything that I made ...

Daj - I don't know what the right way is - but I treat, dry in the kiln, fire out the binder, use.
It can get a bit soggy and friable when wet, so maybe air-drying would be a good move.

Oh, and it stinks when prefiring out the binder.

Where are you in the UK?

When I use fibreboard I soak it in rigidiser to make a mould - the fiber is saturated with the liquid (and becomes soft and fragile till it's fired).
Maybe that's overkill, but it seems to work fine.

I think it's just grease - probably fingerprints - and it will burn off the first time you use the mould.

Bullseye's new thinfire is reputed not to tear during firing... important if you're firing on a fibre shelf and can't use kilnwash. I've certainly had tearing with the new stuff on pieces over 30cm square. But I've also found I can reuse it 4 or 5 times, so I guess you win some you lose some. (I di...

Fire hot enough and you'll get rounded corners if the item is thick enough. Small (15mm) square, 6mm thick will become a circle. (Hotish = 836 C).
This isn't infallible, but half the fun is not knowing what you'll find when you open the kiln door...

Peg, have you found this in general with Effetre in fusing, or only when you include millefiori? Do you make your own millefiori or are you buying it? We make our own milli and murrine and fuse them with effetre sheet and have not experienced incompatibility cracks. I hope we won't begin to see the...

compaitibilty

be warned that not all Effetre colours will be compatible with all your Millefiori colours.. When I was last in Venice I chatted with one of the many fusers there, and he said he has to test every colour with every other colour, and every combination requires a different schedule - typically with 8 ...

Using gold wire for jewellery loops

I routinely use sterling silver for jewellery loops. I am now making a series using embedded gold leaf - and the silver loops look out of place.

Does anyone out there know whether 9ct gold wire will work? Will it hold it's shape?

..well I prefire to 250 deg celcius, with the door ajar - not sure what that is in old money. At this point it is still pink, but dry. Never had a bubble problem (except when ramping up way too fast). I use kilnwash for items up to 35 x 35 cm sq - about 200 sq in. Larger than that and I prefer thinf...

Re: Visiting UK

I'll be visiting the UK in March with another fuser. While there we would love to see what fusers are doing in England and meet some fellow glass artists if possible. If not, any stores or galleries that sell glass work would be great! Thanks, Nancy If you're in Bristol there's the Creative Glass G...
