Tape your layers of glass together prior to cutting so they won't move around.

I've never heard of that- might be a Canadian thing, eh? Hope you were earning interest on the account. A few extra thou? I'd buy a glass lathe. It sounds like it might be a Canadian thing, judging by the response. We only have a handful of banks up here, however even with just those few, things ar...

charge card deposits

When I first got my merchant VISA a few years ago I was required to place several thousand dollars on deposit as security to cover any chargebacks, etc. Was talking to my issuing company about something else, and found out (by chance) that I can apply to have my account reviewed and request the mone...

Re: tried & true firing schedule not working anymore

You could try using a large washer placed above the existing "stop" on a harp to increase the surface area for the shade to rest on.

[quote="Phil Hoppes"] The addition or subtraction of shelves to a kiln is not necessarily a "linear" event meaning that things scale in a linear porportion to the amount of shelving and glass added to your kiln. In your case I suspect you pushed it way over the limit with the 4th...

This has worked for me also. Placing the fused disk into the mold can be done without a suction cup too. Center it in the mold as follows: Balance the disk on the fingertips of your left hand, right side down, then lower the mold upside down over the disk with your right hand, eyeballing for level. ...

Um, I'm noticing that everyone who doesn't pre fire tends to live in hot, dry parts of the US. In rainier or more humid locations, it is less likely the kiln wash will dry completely in a reasonable period of time.

Re: Artist's Bio / Statement - Critiques Comments

Despite completing an M.A. in ancient Greek literature, I was still unemployable, so turned to computer studies. This line of work was very engrossing for a few years, as it forces one to think both linearly and laterally at the same time. But soon I felt something was missing, until I realized tha...

Thanks for the tips. My only concern is that I also use the same kiln for pottery and I'm not sure about the formula with clay. When you're going to fire glass you'll want to scrape your shelves down and apply kiln wash so why not apply BE then. In general, glass requires a much smoother kiln shelf...

Try bamboo skewers or round toothpicks dipped in thick bead release and allowed to dry. The wood burns out and leaves a hole. The skewers leave a larger hole than toothpicks if that is a consideration. Stainless steel mandrels dipped in bead release also work. Once the wood burns out (which would b...

Re: fusing with fiberboard to make holes

[quote="vidrio"]Hi, I have been trying to make holes in small pieces of glass (1 in) for jewelry with fiber board. I've put a small pad of fiber between two layers, trying it with both float and bullseye, and have full fused them at 1550. The glass however, seems to buckle up and not wrap ...

Brick kilns with elements in the lid will drop brick crud on your work. Don't crash cool since this just hastens the decay of the brick, vacuum the lid on occasion. Treat the lid with care in opening and closing so you don't dislodge any loose pieces of brick crud and dust. If you really find this i...
