I have several of the same photos of my own from when I once had a warped shelf. Maybe firing slowly through that range may minimize the problem - but my guess is it is the shelf.

Nikki,

I have a Paragon SC-2 kiln which does have a single ramp controller. I use it for just the purposes that you are suggesting. It's been working great for me for several years. It heats up and cools down quickly.

Re: first firing

Have a small (Jewlery 6"x8"x9") kiln waiting for first firing. Do I need to fire at a lower temp after I put the kiln wash on the shelf and bottom or paint on the wash, fill it and fire it? Will I be able to work with single and double layers of glass in one firing? (I thought for my...

If you have any technical questions, just ask. I have some books to recommend, and some classes (they take 9 years, however. Meals and sleep not included)...

For kilns, I'd recommend looking at the Paragon GL24, or the Skutt Clamshell. They both would work well for what you want to do. You need a nice cutting surface, everyone has their own opinion on that. I like the Morton cutting surface, but carpet, or masonite will do also. Make sure that your cutti...

Yes, that is Brock's double irid technique on those pendants. Since Brock makes his living selling magnets, I didn't want to encroach on his territory, so I made them into pendants :D

Marobi, I have a SC-2 and really like it. I use it in conjunction with my larger Paragon GL-22 AD. I use it for jewelry and small test pieces. It heats up and cools quickly. I haven't tried multiple shelves, but one can run a cycle so quickly, it's not cumbersone to just run two quick firings rather...

Robyn,

Mine are all done by sandblasting off the irid coating using a sandblaster with aluminum oxide abrasive (as taught to me by Brock). I haven't tried using my dremel tool for this application, but my guess is that any diamond tip will work, but you don't need (or want) to go too deep.

Carla, The single vs double rolled issue is also important. You will get totally different appearing bubbles if one or both of your glass layers is single rolled instead of double rolled. The bubbles are bigger and more oval or teardrop shaped, instead of the nice, unobtrusive, round bubbles you usu...

Here is a link with some pendants using Brock's technique. The effect may be more subtle than with dichro, but is very elegant. They are hard to photograph, and look richer and with more depth in person.

Ruth, Assuming I understand how you setup your piece up - the frit on top of the dichro behaves as if it is not in contact with glass - since it isn't. It's actually sitting on top of a layer of metal (ie the dichroic coating). So, instead of blending with the adjacent glass, it contracts and beads-...

Terrie, I have not had this problem, but I wonder if somehow, in placing the piece back in the mold, it was positioned in such a way that a tiny bit of air was trapped under the deep curve. I don't know if the sandblasting played a role in this. If your mold is like mine, there are no holes in the m...

Jackie, It should have worked. Was the glass that you slumped in the group of four the same color and thickness as your single piece firing? 300 dph is a good rate of heating. I usually go to 1000 and hold for about 15 min, then heat to slumping temp at a faster rate (like 600 dph) and then hold at ...

Cheryl, I went through a similar line of questioning last winter. I wanted one that wasn't too large, since I had to navigate it down to the basement. I ended up with this one: Campbell Hausfeld VT6271, VT6271 6 HP, 26 Gallon, Twin Cylinder, Oil Lubricated, Single Stage Portable Air Compressor $449....
