Way up north there's the National Glass Centre in Sunderland (near Newcastle on Tyne). The main exhibition varies, http://www.3k1.co.uk/ngc/general/indexglass2.htm but it is also the home to the university glass studios, where - if you are lucky - you can get to see some pretty amazing kilns (with a...

clear scrap usage

Second, any good suggestions on clear scrap usage( aside from giving it all to one of you!) I have no problem using all my colors, but I seem to be swimming in clear. clear eyed jeri I periodically make platters with bits of clear scrap stacked with randomly placed stringer and frit - it takes seve...

The new thin fire is supposed to be less likely to scuz the edges than the old.
But then, kiln wash doesn't scuz the edges at all. Imagine that! Brock
No pre-firing, either!
..apart from the pre-fire needed to dry the shelf, of course.

Schedules for Murano (Effetre)?

I've got some Murano sheet and millefiori, coe 104. I'm firing 2 layers sheet + millifiofi + bits of cut sheet. Sheet colours clear + turquoise transp + translucent white. (max 11cm square) I've done compatability tests to 800 (deg C), anneal 30 min at 520, and all seems OK - this gave a 'full but n...

Is old kilnwash inert?

Until recently my back garden was a building site, and I happily sanded my kiln shelves clean outside, allowing the kilnwash dust to settle on the rubble. But now I've cleared the site and planted lots of plants.... can anyone tell me whether I'm poisoning the flowers, or is old kilnwash chemically ...

The only problem I can think of it that you will be sticking the paint to the walls, not the glass. The glass is only stuck to the paint, which may not be a strong enough bond to keep them on the wall.

It also makes a HUGE cloud of dust when you cut it Phil
Make that a huge cloud of TOXIC dust. Wear a respirator if you cut it.

I have one backlit plate glass work surface, and one with one of those green cutting mats (intended for cutting paper using a knife). It is pliable enough to 'give' a little to run scores, and has a very useful grid printed on it. You can get them at large stationary and office supply shops in the U...

Thanks Peg. I was rather surprised to hear about the dark spots from silver that you reported. I hadn't heard of that before. What type of silver are you using? Sterling (.925) or fine (.999)? I use Sterling - I know 'fine' is better, but I understand it will still stain. Even when the kiln shelf l...

silver

I make a 'U' from silver, and sandwich the ends by first gluing the silver to a tiny bit of BE thin (anout 3x6mm), and when dry put on the kiln shelf then sit the pendant or whatever on top. If the top bit is small, I sometimes glue it onto the silver. Word of warning - if the silver touches the she...

Re: Chroma paints - anyone tried them?

Chroma Europe Ltd. - Trading as Tomas Seth & Co. They might be able to help you. Good luck. thanks - but it's a different 'Chroma'. I believe the paints I mean are made by a company called 'Ullman', or similar. They are kiln-fired paints, enamels, metallics and textures - quite possibly made fo...

Chroma paints - anyone tried them?

Has anyone tried the Chroma range of paints, as used in Bettina Eberle's book on kiln fired glass? The range includes 'interference paints' and 'crystal ice'. I'm planning to order some from Switzerland (where I assume it is made) - and as it will take a few months to be delivered I plan to order a ...

I did draw up a contract - after casually asking what my cut was and not understanding the reply (duh!) - but the contract assumed 50%, so I'm rewriting it for my next visit.
And they paid cash! (hello Mr Taxman, it will go in the books, honest)

Happy bunny

Just back from my second visit to my first gallery - they took my first consignment a few weeks ago, and I was looking forward to getting my 50% cut from the sold items. After delivering my second batch of glass they handed over my money - and hey - I'm on 66.66%! So I'm one happy bunny - my first g...

When you fire dichroic film down onto a piece of regular glass, and if it's hot enough, the middle of the dichro will melt into the glass and the edges of the dichro will form a rim of the dichro metals. But because the dicho coating itself does not melt, a dicho-to-dichro layering will not always ...

Re: Magazines

I just wrote an article on using drop rings for Glass Craftsman magazine. Here in the UK we are pretty starved of specialist magazines - and I'd never heard of the mag you mention. I checked out their website and have now ordered a subscription ... and I've heard nothing since then. Does anyone hav...
