Hi Katia,

I wondered about doing float and sprinkling powders & frits.

In your post you said "do devit." Did you mean "no" devit?

Elsie, I've been playing with the high fires in clay saucers. Many people go AFAP to 1700 - 1750 but each time I do that my saucer cracks. So I've been going about 600 dph to 1000 then AFAP to 1700 and hold for 90 minutes. They are a neat way to use scrap glass and the 10 1/2" saucer makes a pe...

Thanks Bill.

It just might be worth firing again with some Black Magic. Anything over 1300 is going to distort my bowl.

BTW, we have Bill Branch Chevrolet in Ft. Myers. Any relation?

I use Super Spray a lot but I recenty recycled a broken vase that was lead crystal. I was successful with the final product but the devit was horrible. I melted it in a saucer first then slumped it through a drop out mold. I put Super Spray on it before slumping it thinking it would reach high enoug...

Tyler, You can definitely fire together Skyy Blue malt liquor bottles. They are all made by the same manufacturer -- same coe. As for Rolling Rock -- no problem melting them but I've never put them together. As for beer bottles, look around the rim on the bottom. There is a code which tells who made...

I know the bottle says it matures at 900 but how high do you really have to go for it to mature?

recycled lead crystal

I recently posted on the other board about a vase one of my customer's had given me. It was cracked when it arrived and the shipper didn't want it back. Turns out the vase was lead crystal so I turned to Graham Stone's book to seek information about firing lead crystal. You can see my melts and my f...

Dave, Since I posted my last question to you I used a bunch more of scrap glass, plus refired the ones that cracked. And I fired these in the saucers I had previously used. I did not go AFAP to 1750 and I annealed a lot longer. No cracks at all. Thanks for sharing another way to use our scrap glass....

Thanks, Lauri,

At least that's a start.

There was an oval gold seal on the vase with the initials "I G D".

Steve, Definitely get the 12-key Orton. I have two Jen-Kens which have the Orton Auto-Fire but you have to keep pressing a button to go from 1 - 9. On the 12-Key controller, which is on my new oval Jen-Ken, you just press the number you want. As far as keeping track of programs, I have piece of pape...

Polish Vase

I have a customer who just opened another store and in this particular store he's featuring a lot of "functional" glass of mine but he's also purchasing some beautiful glass vases with lots of holes in them from Poland. One of these vases came into his store damaged and he gave it to me ju...

Tess,

You can apply labels, etc. to the back of a bottle with decopauge.

As far as the kiln wash goes, try not firing so high so the kiln wash doesn't stick to the glass.

I've slumped some Kokomo. I love their bubble gum glass.

Even going to slumping temperature and holding long enough to get all my scallops to show, it devitrified something awful. But I still love bubble gum.

Dave, Couple of questions/comments: After seeing your way of using scrap glass I went to Wal-Mart to purchase some of the saucers. This is so much more efficient than a pot melt in that I was able to get two larger saucers and 10 small saucers in one of my kilns. (Yes, I had enough scrap to fill all...

Bryan,

My guess would be from grinding the edges -- if you are grinding that piece of glass.

My solution to avoid those ugly gray lines is scrub it really well with a toothbrush then put a little Super Spray on the outside edge of the glass.

Dave,

I like the display of all the melts you did.

When you say they are in the clay trays with a drop of glue, do you mean this is the way you actually use them? I'm assuming these are not the trays you melted the glass in :?:

Lynn,

Be careful mixing different bottles -- even the same brands.

Some brand bottles are manufacturered by different companies so the COE is different. I'm afraid you might have lots of cracks.

If you make your own jump rings from the gold wire how do you close them? If you solder, you'd have to have gold solder, right? Or do you close them with a torch or something?

Kitty,

I saw the powder for mixing with water, but they also have a cream for when you don't want to do a bath.

The cream was $35 for a quart. That was what I thought was kind of pricey.

I bought a rheostat for my RapidFire. However, I don't believe you would be able to anneal with a rheostat. I set mine on "1" and let it climb for 90 minutes to reach 1550 for jewelry. Even on the lowest setting it will still climb. I don't anneal small items.
