Re: Sand Mold Basics

Apparently Olivine sand has disappeared in Oz, too. I found that out some time ago but just recently, looking for a substitute, contacted a foundry supplier who said that Olivine flour is still available. He suggested ILMENITE or CHROMITE or a product called RIMS, all of which are available here. Ri...

Re: Test tile firing schedule

Plastic J-bead, the type used for edging drywall sheets, can be used, too, but won't take much weight or look as elegant as Valerie's metal mirror edging. J-bead works OK for 3 mil samples and if you don't make the span too wide it will support 6 mil. I stapled (horizontal) strips of it to the insid...

Re: Finally some new images from my Tropical Woman series

Raf, did you eventually solve the display problem and did these beauties go to a gallery exhibition?

If so, would love to hear about the method you used.

Are there any additions to the series yet? More pics, please.........Jen

Re: Wall Sconce

Is there any way you can reuse the frame/glass support system of the old, boring sconce and simply make new glass to suit?

What type of workshop might you have access to? Metalwork, woodwork?Jen

Re: MELT FUSED INTO CRACKLED PIECE

Very colourful and exciting, Havi. Good luck with this process. I can't offer any input into the glass question but having accidently deleted posts before, when I think I'm going to ramble on I type the post into Text Edit (on a Mac) and then when I'm happy with it, simply copy and paste it. That wa...

Re: slumping glass into a glazed ceramic mold

[quote="Mike Griffin"]I've bought a few glazed plates for slumping. They are often cheap, sometimes very cheap and occasionally you can pick up a plate that has a shape unlike anything that is available in slumping moulds or ceramic bisque. The most difficult task is drilling vent holes as...

I've scanned the image of Albin's Shattered Nude, referred to by Bert, but can't upload it. Get message saying file is too big. According to Preview it's 170.5 Kb. Photoshop is crashing on opening so any suggestions, please? Jen

Re: Buying a lap grinder for UK?

Hi Tracey, you'll probably get answers from more knowledgeable people but for what it's worth, when I returned to Oz (220-240v supply) from North America (110 v - 120V) single phase, I only brought those tools that showed 50-60 htz on the label because North America uses 60 htz and Australia uses 50...

Re: slumping glass into a glazed ceramic mold

Faye posted this previously: Re: Porcelain Kitchenware for Slumping? by Faye Malench » Thu Nov 22, 2012 12:22 am A fast down and dirty method on glazed ceramic surfaces is to coat with spray adhesive, then dust on a layer of dry kiln wash. I use my small glass enamel/powder dispenser to make a smoot...

Re: How to figue a price for a significant sculpture

Anne, never, ever, consider 'wiggle room' part of your marketing strategy. If you drop your price it will appear that you tried to overcharge the client in the first place and will set a precedent for future negotiations. If the price you quote exceeds the budget you can, however, offer to produce a...

Re: Pot Melt Primer

Hi Tracy, Good to reinforce... just to clarify...the problem with my massive meltdown, shown in the pic, was a problem with the information the controller was receiving from the kiln and was probably attributable to the fact that the sensor cable and the power cable were in too close proximity. ( To...

Thanks very much Rose (?). I didn't notice any temperature labelling on any pots I looked at. There wasn't much choice. It was never meant to go that high. As for the tile strips, that's good to know. I wouldn't plan on using it as a bridge to support the pot, I used cut up kiln shelf for that. I ta...
