Blade Stiffener
Phil,
On a slightly different topic, I just got one of those 6" blade stiffeners from HIS for my 10" Result blade, and it makes a huge difference in being able to cut accurately.

I started out with a 60 grit diamond belt from Kingsly North for my Covington WBS, and SiC belts for the other grit sizes. I was so happy with the diamond belt, I later bought 220 and 400 diamond belts. Much faster than using SiC belts. So far, I haven't noticed much decrease in efficiency as I have...

Stringer Storage
I'm trying to figure out a good way to store a gazillion stringers that I pulled in the glory hole. I'm thinking that if I could find some clear plastic tubing, like the "store bought" stringers come in I could make my own holders. So far, I haven't been able to find anything like that. An...

I agree with Bob. 1- Start with small projects that don't require huge amounts of glass and design time. 2- Keep a log of everything that you do. Build on your successes, and learn from your mistakes. 3- Try to keep your pieces two 3mm layers thick. A simple starting project is a coaster as Bob indi...

I had one piece with a similar photographic problem. The only way I could get a representative photo was by placing it on a mirror. http://www.clearwaterglass.com/images/SatinJewel_1.jpg http://www.clearwaterglass.com/Satin_Jewel.htm You might want to experiment with placing a reflective surface of ...

Re: Fiber paper
...these little sharp spikes, almost like the glass started to bleed. I think we're all assuming you are using two 3mm layers of glass (1/4" thickness). If not, the spikes are from shrinkage as the glass reaches these high temps. The less shrinkage, the less the spiking is an issue. It's more ...

Re: gold leaf question
Wispy is a good word, Steve. I like that description. Thanks. Actually, I didn't even realize I used that word until you pointed it out. I looked the word up at dictionary.com and came up with this definition: 1. A small bunch or bundle, as of straw, hair, or grass. 2. a. One that is thin, frail, o...

If you want to use leaf, I think it's probably better with a clear cap. It takes three layers of leaf ( and I'm assuming we're talking about real gold leaf) to get a good gold color. One or two layers start to fire off and become faint. It can give a nice effect if used properly. For the real gold l...

If you use one layer of the leaf and bring to full fuse, much of it will burn off, but if you use three layers, most will remain. You can get nice effects if you have areas with 1,2 and three layers in the same piece. The same holds true for the silver leaf. http://www.clearwaterglass.com/TempuraLun...
