Re: Cold combing

if you get over 212F, you'll get steam and possibly movement. you might test out 160-180 and see how long it would take to dry. you can hold a mirror at one of the peepholes and see if you get any condensation. if not, it's probably dry.

you buy them. it depends upon how big you need. marble or bead makers use them. you can probably get them off ebay cheaply.

Re: Cutting circle from mullite kiln shelf

i would take a diamond blade in a 4" side angle grinder, and carefully lower the blade into the discarded piece near where the edges of the hole will be. make many cuts, and use the edge of it to round off and smooth (and probably bevel) the hole sides. make shallow cuts, deepening them with mu...

Re: GE Silicone II

i like the ace hardware crystal clear silicone over ge. it cures a lot clearer. ge seems to get milky as it cures. it is a bit more than ge though. i never seem to finish a large tube, so the smaller ones, although more expensive per oz, is actually cheaper because i don't have to throw away as much...

the hotter you go, the more it will shrink because it's trying to get to 6mm overall. you might get dogboning or something similar.

take it to the car wash and use their washer. it's not as powerful as a purchased power washer, because no one likes removing the paint from their car.

Re: Sandblasting Question

it's fusing. you can't get all sides to be shiny. whatever is against a mold will always be matte to some degree. a blasted surface will be even more matte than a non-blasted surface, if it's against a shelf.

i do a matte at 1225 for 7 minutes. leave it in the mold, or you risk it unslumping.

Re: French Cleats or Hanging glass panels

anyone with a table saw can make french cleats. try a home handyman, or a shop that makes kitchen cabinets. it's basically a piece of wood or plexiglass, maybe around 10cmx20cmx8mm, cut in half the long way on a 45 degree angle. screw one side to the wall, glue the other side (i use silicone) to the...

Re: Fire Polishing

i'm not sure 5 min at 1275 will firepolish. it won't in my kiln. i'd get a light matte surface.

you should look in at 1275, and see if it's shiny enough for you. if not, just increase the time.

Re: Slumping disaster - HELP!

as the heat has undoubtably caused the glass to stretch, when you flatten it, it won't be round or even again, but distorted.

you can either start over, or use a large flat lap to grind down the edge to make it even. you'd have to do this to all the bowls to make them match.
