Re: Pits and Flip and Fire

Hi, Drewcilla. I frequently cap dichroic glass with a clear cap. If the dichroic is 1.5mm thick, I use a 1.5mm clear cap and put a 3mm piece of glass underneath the dichroic to minimize dimension changes. By using a 1.5 mm cap rather than a 3mm cap, I have reduced the amount of entrained bubble by h...

Re: Can you clean glass jewelry in an ultrasonic cleaner?

Hi, Jodi. I am curious about how an ultrasonic cleaner removes tarnish from sterling silver. Is immersion in water alone in the cleaner sufficient to clean the corrosion? If not and a cleaning agent is used, will an agent strong enough to clean the bail not also attack the glue? If the agent does no...

Re: Dichro frit?

Jim, the coating remains mostly intact but some very fine coating will detach. I have never purchased the frit pre-coated from CBS which has more coating on the surface, but making my own frit worked fine for my project.

Re: Candle Cups?

Hi, Julie. You might be able to make your own candleholders. It would probably not be that difficult to make some from copper tubing or you could make some like mini pocket vases. I noticed the suggested method of mounting the holders to the glass was with E6000. I would probably not use a clear gla...

Re: dichroic glass having flecks come off in firing

Hi, Tom. Those are all good points. I think the issue that makes it so important to have a quality dichroic coating is that Profusion and Duncan are etching those coatings and adding another significant price increase. The expectations that those products will perform reliably is even higher and the...

Re: dichroic glass having flecks come off in firing

Hi, Tom. I can appreciate the process is difficult, but that seems to me to be all the more reason to document and publish expected results to try to prevent customer dissatisfaction. It is also a good reason to test your product more extensively before you ask your customer to do this for you. I am...

Re: dichroic glass having flecks come off in firing

If you are planning to leave the dichroic uncapped and only firing hot enough for bending, you are toast if you have a coating that peels or even just popcorns (gets a sandy feel). Generally the mixture coatings used for Boxes, Circles, Corkscrew are fine uncapped but fade when capped. Sure do wish ...

Re: dichroic glass having flecks come off in firing

Unfortunately, this is nothing new either. Here is a photo I sent CBS seven years ago when the coating totally shredded (the piece of glass in the middle). The other two pieces were in the same firing with no problems. CBS replaced the full sheet which is pretty much the least they can do other than...

Re: HELP with Bartlett RTC1000 program delay

I just went downstairs and the time when I see the Delay setting is after I start running the program and press the Program Review key. Just to be sure, does your user guide have a section in a block titled "Ramp-Hold Programming" on page 9? If so, are you following the instructions in Ste...

Re: HELP with Bartlett RTC1000 program delay

Too lazy to go downstairs and look at my controller, but I believe after you have defined the number of segments for your program and set the ramp and temperature for the last segment and pressed Enter, you are asked to set the Delay. I have never used the Delay feature, but, if you enter 0 for the ...

Re: Devit solution left stains on bottom of piece!

When I use a devit spray, I first place the object on a clean paper towel and then apply the solution. After the solution dries, I gently slide the object on the paper towel which removes any residual overflow.

Have you thought about pressing the coin into a thin sheet of copper and then firing the copper?

Re: Entrapped Water

Hi, all. Thanks for the information and suggestions. The water is entrapped within the little nooks and crannies of the ripple and combed glasses which remained after full fusing into 1/4" thick slabs. This glass has been cut with a saw, smoothed with a flat lap, and ground to shape with a regu...

Entrapped Water

I believe Brock posted about how long it takes to evaporate entrapped water. I have been using 500 degrees/hour to 180 degrees with a 30 minute hold for small 5/8" x 7/8" pieces, but the corner on one piece exploded during the firing yesterday. The smaller piece moved about three inches, w...

Re: do I need to replace those falling pins

I got tired of the rainstorm of falling pins in my Paragon Fusion 10 years ago, so I cemented in the element. I've discovered that after a few years, the Pyrolite comes unstuck and just releases from the firebrick. It doesn't pull out chunks like I expected. Instead, I just gently crumble off the P...

Re: do I need to replace those falling pins

If the coils have already sagged, just use a small propane torch, like plumbers use for soldering copper pipe, to heat the element and then gently push it back into the lid before inserting the pins. Do not allow individual coils to overlap or you will create a hot spot which will shorten the life o...

Re: cracked dichro

Nigel, here is a source for purchasing small amounts of ripple for your experiments. I have bought glass from them for years and the scrap is usually large enough for pendants/earrings.
