One elegant solution I have seen: Stainless steel tubes thru the kiln. Notmally closed at upper end, and when cooling they are left open. The cold ambient air never enters the kiln, only heat is transferred from kiln air intu tubes, where it warms up and while expanding has an chimney effect of incr...

But we need MORE.

I'll pick them here and insert the necessary changes.

It was really a fun job - even in a foreign language :-)
I learned a lot.

Hi Judy, In Czech and Poland they make a lot of lead crystal, but it may be soda lome as well. Can you measure the specific weight. Fill a bucket with water to the rim Immerse the piece(s) into it. Some water flows over. Lift the glass out, and measure how much water is needed to refill. That's how ...

As I opened this can of worms... I do it the other way. I clamp down the drill - yes I use it on a hand drill for speed control. For edges the pad is vertical, for bottoms horizontal. a DIU lapwheel. I keep the piece in hands and move it against the pad. For sculptural forms, I use it like a car pol...

When I ordered my first kiln I was a TOTAL neophyte. I gabbed all kind of information here and draw the specs. It was built by a local ceramic kiln manufacturer. I ordered holes on top and in the middle of the bottom. In the vitrigraph experiment I had a flowerpot in the kiln. The glass cooled too f...

The most recent booK: The dictionary of Glass by Charles Bray. HAve read it only twice yet. A wonderful bedside book. In addition to this I consulta...

I have only two hand pads. The set rotating pads I have for angular grinder goes to 1800 (orange). It gives a nice polish to glass, but not perfect gloss. I suppose pumice and cerium are unavoidable steps. One should use the pads in binary order. First coarse, then double the grit and work until mag...

Mine are of two brands with different color coding!

A rule of thumb SEEMS TO BE that
coarse pads have small patches of abrasive
fine grits come with larger patches.

The dictionary is growing nicely. At present it has some 150 entries. I think it is becoming useful, I'll launch the first version soon. I still have to work out the hyperlinks between entries. To Rodney and Kim

I have not really done pate de verre. The information was from my glass chemist, Mr. Antero Tammisto. He provides the Finnish factories with colored glass, around 96 COE.

I have used his powders to paint between float. No observable stress. Done the same with BE powder on float.
