I seem to remember that COE is Exponential. IF so, then the difference between 96 and 100 is 40, or 400, I can't remember.

Oh and your float could be anywhere from 80 something to 120 something. Depending on mfg ect...

The white plates brought back a possibly helpfull memory. A while ago I visited a "Country INN" in PA. My freind was staff, so we hung out in the basement for a while. This is a $600 a night place, where you can borrow the Rolls for picnics. Anyway, while in the basement I spotted a kiln. ...

Results. Finally got the pieces out and divested yesterday. Did some cold work today. Graphite kiln wash in the bottom of the mold, on embedded kiln shelf, UNDER frit. No obvious results other than failure. Alumina Wash: This wash brushed on a dry-ish mold. Water and Alumina to a thin skim milk colo...

Gabbert GB-12 works OK. Coe unknown. 25% lead. last check, $0.20 a lb. PLus shipping from WV.

Spectrum IS COE 96, and casts well, though it may be hard to get cullett in small (under a ton ) amounts. It does take 1500+ to get it really running, but good results, if your mold will handle it.

I invested in the longsleeved gloves, and have never looked back. Also I wear a sweat shirt (too often 50/50 gets kind of crunchy). SO with the gloves, I'm covered to the elbow, the sweatshirt takes care of the rest.

The annealing sched looks fine to me, I'm just finishing a 10 day cycle tommorrow. I think he may be annealing the pieces shown at 1 week. But I've learned to add a day whenever I'm in doubt.

The Melting sched looks long, but I can't argue with the results. Hot stuff.

Counterweights. The easiest is lengths of 4" PVXC pipe with glued on caps, drill a hole across the top, and put in a bolt. Hang this from the cable. If you use sand, then they are adjustable by dumping. Crashing: I would recommend Real Kevlar gloves, cotton (not 50/50) clothing, and a cheap fac...

I'm not an expert, but blowing and casting with 96, I'll put my foot in. You shouldn't have to go much about 1550degF to get 96 to run. BELOW 1500degF, it's a pig. A real ANNOYING PIG. In the shop we've been playing with pick-up/roll-ups using 96. It's working fine so far. If you are missing the swi...

I have seen wonderfull results from HOT CASTING into graphite, then popping the piece, then annealing. I was told by a MFG at GAS, that Graphite starts to break down around 1100degF. It looses cohesion. If you had a pot/furnace, gather a punty, drop the glass into the graphite, cut it off, torch the...

Just a couple of random ideas that I have not tried. Rubber cement: Form fitting, can be as thick as you want, removable later. Dipable rubber: The kind they sell for tool handles. Same thing here. Both of these would require doing the designing/cutting on the piece, but you would avoid wrinkles bub...

Graphite kiln wash

Has anyone played with Graphite mixes in plaster molds? I know that HOT, it works very well for a bright surface. But how does it hold up to the Long cycle in the oven? Current plan is to try a graphite/kaolin wash and a graphite Alumina wash, on the inside of the molds prior to firing. I'm also try...

No probs with the steel outer shell. The guys in the shop swear by them, and I'm watching the results carefully. The other "new thing" is using expanded metal instead of chicken wire, for a reusable, reinforcement. These molds have not been removed yet, so I don't know how the metal will s...
