Re: Ever seen THIS before?

I sprayed borax on the glass but not while it was in the kiln.

Re: Ever seen THIS before?

Re: Ever seen THIS before?

Not sure if this will show very well, but the stuff is even crystalized onto the thermocoupler. It will come off, but strange...

Re: Ever seen THIS before?

Yes, it seems to wash off fine. There is devit on the areas where the 'mold/snow' was heavier. I've used the same batch of fiber paper and thinfire as this before. Only new element is the stainless strips. So odd. If I put some of the stainless in my kiln alone to test, how high do I need fire it to...

Ever seen THIS before?

This is what I found when I opened my kiln this morning. Looks like it snowed in there! A friend, who was a machinist, gave me a coil of some thin stainless steel (yes, I'm sure it's stainless). I used it to form into a circle (didn't have a mold that size) lined it with thinfire covered 1/8' fiber ...

Re: Shard bowl issue

I have no idea where this tempered glass came from. It could be 5 or 20 years old...guess I shouldn't depend on it being compatible.

Re: Shard bowl issue

Success! (After many, many tests :-2q(-_-)p) I had to do it in two firings, but I got the look/thickness/and clarity that I was hoping for! Now for my next question.... I got a lot of tempered glass from a friend (old shower doors) - do I need to keep each piece separated once shattered and us...

Re: Shard bowl issue

Yep, I'm finding that out - can't have it all. I have another test in now adjusting my top temp. Float/tempered glass is new to me, and I haven't had to do this much experimenting in while. I'm actually having a fun/frustrating time with it. Good thing I got the glass for free!! I will not let this ...

Re: Shard bowl issue

Won't I loose the individual 'shards' look (which is what I'm going for) if I fire that high?

Re: Shard bowl issue

Thanks. That's kind of what I figured...I'll give it a try and see if I get better results. Will the borax spray do any good if I'm not firing above 1400?

Shard bowl issue

In making my shard bowls/plates with tempered glass, I can't seem to get the edges thick enough. I pile the shards up just as thick on the edges (on plate/shallow bowl mold), but for some reason the edges come out like one layer thick and VERY fragile - hardly fused. The middle is perfect. The only ...

Re: Rough Edges...

I don't have a sandblaster, so I've been trying to do this in one firing (tack/slump). I have carefully sprayed a little borax with a fine mister on the last one I did, but really don't think I used enough. Do I risk much more devit if I fire it twice by tacking and then fusing, or am I better off t...

Re: Rough Edges...

Thanks, I'll give that a try. Do you think it will make a difference if I overspray it, or am I firing it at too low a temp to matter? I use the borax spray Brad has on the warm tips site.

Rough Edges...

I was given a bunch of tempered glass from a friend who was remodeling her bathroom. Yeah! Never really worked with it before, so it's kind of trial and error (more error #-o ). I seem to have the firing schedule figured out, but can't for the life of me get smooth edges. I pile it up about 1/4"...
