. . . I don't think you need some anguished angst-ridden psychosis to produce good work, I don't think you need some long thought process and self-justification to produce good work, I think you need a command of the techniques you employ, . . . and a voice. The voice is the hard part. Brock I agre...

Ahhh... lunchtime. These responses are fascinating! I love these questions and the value behind considering answers to them. I've always considered current work to be simply a precursor to future work. Upon finishing a piece, it's easy for me to detach, cast a critical eye, and move onto the next wi...

>> My favorite art (and I include poetry in particular here) is ambiguous. No neat explanation. No clever dissection of symbols, etc. This is the type of art to which I can continually return, year after year, always harvesting some new crop of wonder, fear, joy, intrigue. I believe art can (and of...

Re: Thoughtful work?
[quote="Catharine Newell"]North Lands Glass (Scotland) was an amazing experience in so many ways... but I think the most important point of conversation in Kirstie Rae and David Nash's courses (and the conference, as well) was "Why are you doing the work that you do? What is your thou...

I work non-figuratively. I've painted a little but the bulk of my work is patterns and adornment. This is mainly because I don't have the drawing/painting skills that you have Catharine. I'm drawn to painting (groan) but it's an incredibly painful process for me, and the majority of my attempts nev...

Gee Whiz... How terrific to come to my computer this morning, with coffee in hand, to find all this! Thanks so much, everyone. It was a terrifically exciting surprise to hear about the Craft Houston Merit Award and I am most grateful to have had my work singled out. The work in the show is of outsta...

Those particular relays have an electrical life expectancy of 100,000 cycles at 25 Amps. If you assume the relays click every 10 seconds when the kiln is on, that's a million seconds of operation or 277 hours of operation. That's really not a lot of time. And since relays are rated for average life...

Catharine, Did you happen to save the failed relays??? It would be helpful to know what the manufacturer and model number were. A recent conversation with Marty at Centre DeVerre indicated that of the hundreds of relays that he has replaced in kilns, a very small percentage, if any, of the mechanic...

I don't have your equipment, but I'm thinking relays... I've recently had problems with mechanical relays and have had to throw the circuit breaker each time to cut power to the elements; however this problem did not ultimately affect my controller. These mechanical relays have since been replaced w...

Whoo HOO! Global labs at my disposal, Brian? Cool. Makes me seriously think of moving to Shanklin.... I would labor in your asparagus fields, muck out your pond and do your marketing for access to ur cheetin technology. When I next cut new panel layers, I will post photos prior to fusing. I'm anxiou...

Ahhhh.... here we go, Lani. That makes perfect sense to me. One side of this problematic seam was 1101-30 over 1101-30; the other side was 1414 over 0137. I guess I've just been lucky before this! Thanks for the explanation. Been hearing from Esteban - the globe trotting roll-up maestro sounds like ...
