Lonman, I had this happen. I was able to get it to flatten out by re-firing, but it left a mark which was pretty obvious and not very attractive. I covered it up by sandblasting a design to obscure it, so you might try that if you don't like the looks of your piece after re-firing.

You only need the thinnest of coatings with vaseline...it doesn't need to be thick or gooey. Just touch your fingertip to the vaseline and wipe it over the mark. Yes, chapstick works, or just a light coat of plain old vaseline!

I got a ferro pen from Fusion Headquarters (http://www.fusionheadquarters.com). They recommend firing on top or between layers to 1050-1150 degrees F.

How about using a circle of fiber paper in the bottom of the mold or drop-out to make a rim? (see Bullseye's kiln-carving tip sheet)
