Re: Fiber floor kiln

Lin T, the only fatal mistakes are those that you learn nothing of. Nobody has learned bicycle riding by reading books. You learn by doing. Keep notes, about everything Add comments to your kiln diary, photos if possible. Evaluate ALL results in your notes. I am practically self learned. It takes ne...

Re: Graphics

One possibility I have not yet tried, is to make one piece on carved plaster. Using this glass as original, it should be possible to 1. cast a new "precarved" plaster block. or 2, make a permanent clay mold. The clay mold needs a separator that deteriotes the crispness of the lines. WARNIN...

Re: Where?

At least here the kilnforming seem sto follow the track of tiffany. First it is a hobby fad. Then some want to advance to professionals. For a professional to get butter on bread, (s)he starts teaching. That's the business. It also erodes them arkets for mediocre products. Some people however get ov...

Re: Graphics

My limited experience is that it is hard to catch the drawing with a solid sheet.
First did I cast the sheet of frit. In the latest pieces, i have used a layer of fine frit under the sheet. That seems to pick the color of lines better.

Re: Graphics

The glass is slippery. it is much easier to paint on a surface that has some tooth.
On glass I make it y priming with 3M contact glue spray. Let it dry over night and you have surface that is more easy to paint.

Re: drop vase - strips separating when making blank

My uneducated guess is that your strips were opaque. many opaque glasses are more viscose that clear glass. During the drop gravity pulls the glass gown. The softer Tekta gives more and this may cause full separation of the stiffer strips, leaving a clear line between. There may be a difference -- i...

Re: Graphics

Susan and Dirty Old Man (self portrait) were essentially frit casting. So one firing. Nerd Girl was also fired only once.. The color fields are on the opposite side of the sheet. To Morganica's question. To soften a sheet so much that it pics the color from grooves takes time and temperature. It is ...

Re: Graphics

That was my point Carol, to share the technique with someone who can do art with it. What is gGassline? Is it some kind of liquid stringer? The plaster plate I cast against an waxed window glass to get a good surface. Carving is with any sharp object. Dental picks are excellent. The groove is best f...

Maybe I am wrong as usual.
Isn't the traditional chrystal cutting made with sandstone wheels?

I like drawing. It is not simple when fusing. I have made few tests with a graphic method. The image is carved on a plaster plate. The grooves are filled with glass powder. Susan was the first one, It was frit casted. Very good resolution, not enpugh saturation. In the self portrait "Dirty Old ...

Re: Re-heating Thick Glass

So Lauri, you suggest a rule of thumb of twice as fast a heat up as the initial rate of cooling until the Annealing temp is reached. Then double the initial re-heat rate. Do I understand you correctly? Stephen Pretty much that Stephen. The Delta=10 C seems to be a safe rule downwards. A bit on the ...

Re: Re-heating Thick Glass

Let us first look at annealing. The purpose of annealing is to prevent the formation of permanent "frozed in" stress. Byllseye studien tell that this is achieved when the thermal difference between the coldest and hottest part is less than 5 C. Annealing soak does that. Annealing proper ma...

No, you're okay. Sit the piece up on blocks on top of a light source and just move the films around to check areas. One on top, one on the bottom, and hold the films so that you have the darkest possible configuration. A minor addition. Can you position the 'back' polarized film on the light source...

Re: using cookie cutters

Hi Lauri -- What a great idea. I'm ready! Do you bisque fire in your glass kiln? If so, what schedule do you use? (There's a business where they'll do that here, but if they're busy it can take a while for them to get to it.) Thanks, Sherry Yes, I have fiber kiln rated to 1150C (=2100F). I dare not...

At least in the old program
a PM stays in outbox until opened by the recipient.
I guess it is the same here.

Think about outbox as "sent"
and sent as "received"

Re: quick cutting tool from Doug Randall's video

Today I solved the equal width problem with Silberschnitt cutter. Works also on glasstar. First I make a test piece of scrap glass, sau 3/4" wide. If I am happy with the accuracy then I align the glass against the edge stop. Take your test strip and place it over the moving bar next to cutter h...

Re: using cookie cutters

With cookie cutter moulds the problem is you need
a lot of them to be productive.
My solution is to
- roll a slab of clay,
- cut several holes into it with cookie cutter
- bisque fire
-kilnwash
and use.
