As to burning out, that should not happen at all. It is possible that the pigment in the paint has decomposed. Do not trust the color of the unfired paint to indicate the final color. I don't know if they still do it, but both CBS and ATF made sample sets of their colors with a 2x2 piece of each color.
I bought these and cut them in half and fired half. I mounted them together for a sampling of each before and after. Even with these, there is some variation.

I use a little bit of my paints....just a dot, to attach the balls. This seems to act as a buffer for the differing COEs.
Remember the contact area is very small.

I have had several occasions where small flecks of dichro coating popped around when fired.

That is quite unusual. The stuff is quite precious and usually is sold in a small (2dram) sealed bottle.

What is the brand.
Delarobbia and Duncan are the most common ones.

Forgot:
Two types, but you probably have the one that fully matures at about 1350 (but 1300 usually works fine)
Other kind matures lower.

Works fine on glass
Needs to be applied very thin, not puddling.
Vent the kiln up to 1000 then close.
Works well but is difficult to apply.

This is just an academic question as I don't do any pieces larger than 2x2. But: why could you not heat the piece to about 900 to 1000 (F) and stabilize there. Then, raise the temp AFAP to tack fuse temp, hold for a short time, then crash to 900. The curing of the scratch problem is a surface proble...

Use a low temperature flux, or a glass paint as a glue. I've done a lot of these.
