Is there any chance that you fired too high and the piece slid down the edges of the mold, leaving what looks like a bubble on the bottom? I've had this happen once or twice when I fired above 1300 trying to quickly fire polish with the piece in a mold.

Got a photo of the bubble?

Re: Slumping question

I have been fusing and slumping for a while with some very good results, but there is one thing I'm wondering about. (Hope this doesn't sound too dumb!) Can you slump over cans, i.e. the ones that food comes in? or does it get too hot for them? Yes, you can slump over cans. (Not long ago, I wrote a...

This has been extensively discussed on both the regular board and in the old archives. Try clicking on Search above (or click on Old Archive) -- I'm sure a search will turn up lots of information on this topic.

Thanks.

I'd use plaster/silica. Mix it soft (i.e., 1 part plaster, 2 parts silica), apply it to the mold wet, carve it after it dries, then scrape it off after you've fired.

Also, I think you also have to get a merchant account seperately - can you use the same merchant account for web and point of presence sales or do you have to have two? You can use the same merchant account for both web and point of presence sales. But verify with your specific processor -- sometim...

There are two types of the 20 Mule Team. One is pure borax, the other has additives. Check and see if you have the one that's 100% borax.

If you don't and can't find it, most pottery supply places will have borax.

Neither UPS nor FedEx will accept cash on COD orders. The take money order, cashier's check, or bank check. You assume the risk for bad checks.

One drawback with using COD -- if the customer refuses the shipment, you get stuck with the bill.

... we tried throwing in a few pieces of the millifori rods which have a slightly different COE just to see what would happen, and stress cracks developed. Our local stained glass store owner says he has no problem mixing a few of these in - is he all wet or is it our firing? Most millifiori rods a...

Are these stretch marks or mold marks from the slumping? Usually these form along the underside edges of the glass where it starts to stretch down the mold. They're much more likely on clear, and are usually caused by slumping too quickly.

Why is this product better than using regular dams from mullite backed with kiln brick or posts? It would certainly need some kind of superior qualities to justify its cost????l The vermiculite board is $5 a square foot retail. Mullite shelves are around $10 to $20 a square foot. So unless you alre...

Highly unlikely. My guess is that it would ignite at around 450F. The paper clay you want is regular clay mixed with cellulose. You can make it yourself or you can buy it from places like Axner. I sift plaster on the floor (with a liberated flour sieve) and vaccuum it out with a mini car-vac every couple of firings and then sift some more. Plaster is cheaper than kiln wash, that's all. Not really. I kiln wash the floor, then forget it. No need to ever re-apply unless you have a disaster.

Re: kiln wash on kiln floor?

i've heard from many folks that it is a good idea to paint the floor of the kiln with kiln wash, but spoke with Neil at Skutt the other day and he disagrees. he feels that coating the floor with kiln wash changes the thermodynamics of the kiln in a negative way. wondering what any of you think abou...

Re: De-Bubbleizer?

Okay, Ellen, let's get technical; exactly what is a De-Bubbleizer? There are a number of products available for minimizing bubbles in plaster. In most cases, you wet the model or rubber mold with the "de-bubbleizer" before pouring in the plaster. It makes it easier for the bubbles to vibr...
