Buttercup, The butterflies are lovely. What did you use for a medium? I ask because you managed to achieve some nice color blending.

Re: transparent enamels 1200 F - brands
Kathy Peterson's The Good Stuff has a selection of paints that are modified for use on glass and mature below 1200 F. Her store is mainly geared toward porcelain painting but she carries a very nice selection of stuff for glass.

Re: First attempt
Very painterly. Try to hold onto that nice, loose style. It is too easy to get caught up in trying to replicate what is in a photo instead of conveying the feeling inspired by the scene. Roger Thomas is so good at that. He sometimes slices up a fired piece, rearranges the strips, throws on some more...

What a very interesting combination of techniques. The site you referenced has some very striking examples of what is possible. I also enjoyed seeing some of the results of his color tests. Keep us informed of the results while you pursue this exciting method.

Re: Tree trunk/bark color
I'm trying to find the same thing. I had pretty good results by using BE's white/black/brown streaky as a base, covering that with medium and coarse light amber frit, then sifting powder in streaks of olive, blue, gray. The larger grains going on first provide a peek at the base color and allow the ...

They are lovely. Soothing color combinations make the black insects pop while still holding the composition together. Ingenious framing!

Re: Ceramic and glass
Peter, From the labels you gave as "front lit" and "back lit" it appears that the yellow piece was formed in a space that was cut out of the clay. If so, did you use fiber paper to cushion the glass to ease the difference in contraction between the clay and glass during firing? I...

Re: Sticky cabochons: shelf paper vs kiln wash again
So the benefit of using a sifting of alumina (or similar) is so you get the separator effect without the conversion thing that kiln wash goes through that results in it's becoming caked and chippy? So what is the downside of that choice that has us using kiln wash or shelf paper?

Looking for a small vacuum for studio
What type of vacuum do you use for cleaning up shop debris? I'd like to have something like a 2 gallon shop vac that is easy to handle but still has proper filtration. While I don't see dust flying out of the exhaust of DH's big ole shop vac I don't feel confident regarding the filter. Any advice?

Beautiful work! A great eye for color and detail. I'm intrigued by the way she uses stitching to indicate elements that are not otherwise represented by color - particularly clouds. Thanks for posting.

Re: Buying first kiln...will specific project fit?
Shelley, You'll want to put your mold on kiln posts when you get ready to slump. That keeps air that is being pushed out through the hole in the bottom of the mold from getting trapped between mold and shelf and causing problems. I remove the shelf and put mold on posts directly on the kiln floor. T...
