Ok to fuse without shelf on floor?
Heya! Here's my idea: 1. The floor of my kiln is ridiculously slathered in layers and layers of kilnwash (fired many times). 2. The kilnwash on the floor of the kiln is covered in a layer of thin fire. 3. I made a large ring-dam (about 22" diameter), which is (a) on the thinfire, (b) braced on ...

Re: Carbon burn off and heating element damage
Thank you all so much. Bert: yes, I wasn't intending to imply that binders consume all oxygen, or that they produce the kinds of reducing environments yielded by adding wood or... I dunno, a bag of m&ms to the kiln interior. So if I understand the responses, the heating element damage (for coil-...

Carbon burn off and heating element damage
Hey good people, I have caught warnings hither and thither about careful ventilation of electric kilns with coil-type heating elements when burning off carbon, and perhaps other substances (e.g. CMC or other binders, etc.). I believe I have also heard it expressed also that creating an unenclosed re...

Affordable Inspirations from Tasmania sell a product that seems suitable for a small studio as it claims that minimal powder is produced. I'll buy one next time I'm in shopping mode. I've got my old knuckles dragging on the ground model still going but am just about over all the cleaning and drying...

Re: Alternate Source for TF 3 Relays
The Orton controller on our Paragon Fusion 10 kiln takes 30A TF 3 relays. Anyone know of an alternate source for these that's cheaper than Paragon ($30.25)? I have found that Gopher Electronics (http://www.gopherelectronics.com/) and Mouser Electronics (http://www.mouser.com) are also good. Gopher ...

Re: Borax anti-devit side up versus side down
3. Suppose I treat the top of some glass with this solution, and then in a separate firing flip the glass, is there a danger of glass sticking to either kilnwash or thinfire? Gosh, what great questions Alexis! Why, thank you, Alexis. ;) Anyway, the insight I wanted to share regarding #3 is that fir...

Have you written the company to see if they will provide information about firing?

Re: metal bands used in firing?
Metal bands used in firing? AC DC for classic mood, Soundgarden for punkish metal, but Dragonforce when I need some serious Dungeons and Dragons-themed speed metal. Honestly though, I tend to avoid metal when fusing and listen to Dylan, Kate Bush, Art of Noise and Boston.

Re: Can I replace my plug?
I don't have the GL24 here yet but looked at the plug, and it's different than the Skutt. They do both run on a 50 amp breaker, which I have. Sounds like it would be smarter to take the route you're recommending, Brad. We'll see what the electrician tells me when the kiln arrives in a couple weeks....

Re: Slumping- number of molds at once?
In my experience low temperature slumps (~605º C) are problematic when 'shading' lower pieces from the top elements (when only top elements are on). Same goes for placing slumping molds on stacks of shelves.

Re: Tempered Glass Shards
I was told you are not supposed to fuse tempered glass. Huh . . . wonder if I need to throw out my castings and jewelry then. Or wait: was that a moral "not supposed" or a technical "not supposed?" ;) One of the most beautiful glass objects I own (or have even seen) is a casting...

Re: Advice on a kiln for fusing 17" bowl?
Thanks Lori. In your experience does your kiln heat evenly? I'm fixated on this question because since 2001 I have used a jewelry burnout kiln that has elements in three walls. The first thing I had to do with this kiln was map the hot and "cool" spots, and now I have to allow for that wh...

Re: Advice on a kiln for fusing 17" bowl?
Thank you, Alexis, Looked up your kiln and its replacement GL-24AD certainly is a beauty. But $2,800 is a bit high for me! I don't expect the more modestly priced kilns to last as long as "production" kilns. I do not need a workhorse; I expect to fire this every 14 days or so--I have a sm...

Re: Advice on a kiln for fusing 17" bowl?
Hey welcome back, I use a front-loading Paragon GL24ATDTS and work in shallow bowl forms ranging from about 8" to 17". I love this kiln: super versatile! I also do casting and pate de verre on occasion, but it's so nice for the bowls. The side elements generally come in when I am doing cas...

Re: Glass grinding with silicon carbide by hand
My question is; Is it necessary to sand blast the float glass before using it the first time? Will sandblasting the float glass help the grit to stick slightly to the float glass and make for more friction? The float glass will also be shaped by grinding. When you use a coarser grit, the float will...

Re: Cutting THICK glass demo
There are ways to accomplish this with a less expensive set of tools. My tapping tool costs a dollar. I get a cheap screwdriver, and heat it red hot with a propane torch. Then grind the edge to a convex arc.] Bert, how would you compare the quality of the breaks you get with your tool to the 'flopp...

Re: sifting with a doily
If you spray the entire surface with adhesive, then lay the doily down, isn't the adhesive that's under the doily going to still be sticky when you remove the doily? And as you tip the whole piece to get rid of the excess, won't the powder stick onto the previously covered areas? I can imagine that...

Borax anti-devit side up versus side down
Some questions. I sometimes use the borax/water/detergent recipe to control devitrification. I work almost exclusively with float and float-compatible stuff. I find that application of this mixture (and then firing to above about 760ºC) gives a nice 'flowiness' to the glass in addition to/as part of...

Re: Casting bronze with Glass
I've seen a glass casting by Keith Cummings which appeared to be glass with a very high metal content, enough to enable the metal content to be polished. He has examples and a general discussion in his book 'Techniques of Kiln-formed Glass' (pages 95-98). The iridescence on the piece in the below p...
