Re: plaster silica

I just used silica that's at least five years old with some new #1 pottery plaster, 50x50 and it set and dried nicely. The silica was stored in pretty stable conditions in a plastic bag.

Re: painting crisp, even thickness lines

Terry, I airbrush transparent enamels, even for lines through a resist. Yes, it requires commitment to say the least. For black lines, drawing, I almost always freehand trace with a rigger. I trace with paint prepared with D1368 water friendly medium. I go slow. If I were to try to do straight lines...

Re: painting crisp, even thickness lines

I second what Brad suggested. It is relatively easy to use two blades taped together to cut through vinyl paint mask resist. It would be unrealistic to attempt it on a three dimensional surface but on flat glass without too much texture it works. I like Oracal 813 resist because I can see my cuts, s...

Re: enamel suggestions

I was able to get a watercolour look by mixing powder frit with "cable pull gel" (available at Home Depot) You wind up with a acrylic paint like consistency. Then apply to glass with brushes as if painting a watecolour . try it !! Got any idea what it is, from a chemical standpoint, Don? ...

Re: enamel suggestions

Airbrushing fusemaster transparents: one of the most effective techniques for introducing lead monosilicate into your studio atmosphere. I do it all the time (not with fusemaster, but their equivalent). Be careful Peter please.

Re: Little Purple Riding Hood

Thanks for the compliments Kevin. And Don M. I'm kind of in-tune with glass painting education and warm glass education, from being active in the American Glass Guild and from hanging out at the online sites and paying attention to social media. I think we're in pretty good shape in terms of skill t...

Little Purple Riding Hood

This is the bottom half of a two panel installation. It's mostly antique and flashed glass but the border is all Bullseye purple with cabochons of green, pink and amber fused to it. The reverse side of the border was blasted away to reveal the color of the cabs before painting the imagery on the fro...

Re: Glues and silicones

Lots of architecture glass is being fabricated with two-part silicone . Bohle gives demos of the technique from time to time at AGG and SGAA conferences. They have You Tube videos. Looks pretty fussy to me. Never tried it.

Re: Group use of a large studio

I can't give any advice from experience but I do want to offer encouragement and hope it works out well for you. It could be a cool thing if you figure out how to make it work. Maybe if you structure it correctly and declare a community focused service mission you could get some public arts funding.

Re: Do I need to “season” my new shelf?

I only recently learned to apply the primer to a hot shelf. My practice now is with a very warm shelf.....with the kiln at about 120F or so. I was surprised and pleased to see the result of using BE primer at their recommended mix ration: 5 to 1 water to powder. I was making it more thick and it was...

Re: enamel suggestions

The application technique probably matters more than the paint if you're going for a watercolor look. If you want brilliant transparent color, you're limited to lead bearing low fire enamels. Airbrushing those paints is a challenge in managing overspray and cleanup, but some crazy people do it. Emai...

Re: Float Glass Reco Needed for Decals

Sounds like an ideal application for a glass painting approach rather than a fusing approach. Get a quill pen, put some stained glass paint in a little bit of oil, and draw the stuff on the piece of glass. Fire to 1250F and the piece stays the shape and thickness originally cut. I don't know what br...

Re: Woodblock printing on glass - ?

Derivatives of Dana’s suggestion: print from the woodblock to decal paper and then transfer the decal to glass. Or use screen printing drawing fluid and print the block on a screen fabric. Both techniques are a little complicated for a one-off print, but the investment might lead to more fun

Re: Flash glass questions

I do stained glass and frequently use fused layers to afford the multiple color capability of flashed glass. I don’t full fuse the way the ‘kiln press ‘ folks do. I tack fuse the layers to better retain the shape of the individual piece. It works well. It doesn’t ultimately save me any money because...
