Re: How to discover compatibility
I don't think I would reuse the glass in a project. However, you might enjoy testing the glass for compatibility. Here are two articles that show how to use polarizing filters to test for stress. I experimented with filters and with polarizing sunglasses: http://www.paragonweb.com/Kiln_Pointer.cfm?P...

Re: Kiln element dropping dust
The new one isn't bulging out; the previous one was. Apparently it was moving around and causing brick dust to drop. The pins fall out very easily. The new lid (a month old) already has pins loosening, with every firing. Is the dust coming from where the pins are loose? Sincerely, Arnold Howard Par...

Re: Olympic kiln problems
I have trouble getting at the bolts that hold the mechanism in place and bought a special rachet, to no avail. Try removing only one mounting bolt per relay and loosen the other bolt. Then slide the relay out from under the loose bolt. This is much faster than removing two bolts. Sincerely, Arnold ...

Re: kiln replacement
After the meltdown I had, I replace the elements in all of my kilns every couple years (I buy them in bulk online). I check the connections as Marty mentioned, vacuum, and check and clean the plugs every now and then. I've been known to pray and sacrifice too. Valerie, you wrote elements, but you p...

Re: Kiln cement for chipped brick
I bought a used kiln and it had a fair amount of chips along the edge of the lid and the body from the previous owner propping it open. I decided to skim a thin layer of furnace cement over the bricks to keep them from flaking. The layer started lifting and peeling as it dried, taking brick chunks ...

Re: kiln in unheated garage
My kiln is in an unheated attached garage. I've never had problems firing it during the winter....but it has never been this cold since I've lived in this house. Temps in the mid hudson valley of NY will be below zero at night and single digits during the day. Does anyone think there are issues I s...

1 & 2 are being completed successfully, fails on 3 and return an error message (ERR1) that means the kiln has not increased temperature by more than 8 degrees an hour (and in fact the kiln temp is falling). Your safety switch may be out of adjustment. (The safety switch turns off power to the e...

Re: From Arnold at Paragon
As long as Sheila is there, everything will get done right. Barry, thanks for your comment. We are fortunate to have Shelia. I knew that even before she began working here. She has a high level of common sense and cares about the customer and the quality of the kilns. Sincerely, Arnold Howard Parag...

Change in leadership at Paragon Industries, L.P.
The Hohenshelt family, owners of Paragon Industries, L.P., just announced that John S. Hohenshelt is stepping down as president of Paragon. The Hohenshelts will continue to own the company. They bought Paragon Industries 31 years ago, and they look forward to building kilns well into the future. Joh...

Re: Oval Kiln Warp
I am looking to purchase a new kiln. Two I am looking at are: Evenheat 2541, and Skutt 1414. I have been reading some posts online about lid warp (or wings). The posts appear to be older (2001ish-2004ish). Is lid warp still an issue with these kilns, or have these issues been resolved? The lid expa...

Re: Evenheat 2841 Kiln rusted out
I have had my Evenheat 2841 kiln for about 9 years now. Three years ago the top caved in when the rusted banding gave way. Just recently the bottom metal started falling off. Now the kiln bricks are exposed. The bottom is about 80% rust. The rust that fell off is chunks and powder. I am curious if ...

Re: 1/8 Inch Fiber Paper
Arnold has mentioned that option to me before, but I've never been able to figure out exactly why it would work well or exactly how to make it work. But, as Marty said, Arnold is a straight shooter and is easy to work with. I would ask him for advice on the fiber paper that would work best and woul...

Re: Kiln Question
I acquired a Paragon Fusion 7 Kiln when I purchased the entire inventory of a stained glass studio that went out of business a couple of years ago. Now I want to learn how to use the kiln. Question: I noticed there is a circular hole on the side of the kiln. Is there a part that goes into this hole...

Re: I too had a fusing disaster
what could cause multiple large bubbles in a piece which is simply two pieces of glass on top of each other with no inclusions? I used the slow full fuse program that has been used perfectly many many times. Was the length of the firing the same as your previous firings? Sincerely, Arnold Howard Pa...

Re: Element placement and firing results
I just purchased a Caldera to have a travel kiln. Realizing it probably takes a few experimental runs, will there be much difference in firing from a Fusion 16 with a top/lid element, vs the side elements in this small kiln? I plan to fuse 6x6 tiles. chelseaglass Thank you for your business. If you...

hi all I have a quite deep kiln 380 x 380 x 420 mm kiln with 2 sets of elements on the sides . I'm thinking of dividing the kiln in to 2 parts top and bottom by putting in a shelf of microporous silica broad (it a kiln liner broad) i would use fire bricks to set the shelf on and make it as close as...
