Re: Making bisque ceramic molds
what schedule would you use to bisque fire? I would like to make some textures. can I fire in my glass kiln? that would open up a whole new world!!!
the bisque temp is dependent upon the clay you're using. it's using in the 1850-1900F range, probably out of ...

Re: Making bisque ceramic molds

any clay is ok. you want to make the backs hollow, and if they're deep, they should have holes in the lowest spots to let air escape when the glass is slumping down to touch bottom. if they are very thick in places, they will shield heat (be a heat sink) from getting to the shelf under them, which c...

Re: Slumping- number of molds at once?

the # of molds you can slump in one load depends upon the size of the molds (floor space) and heat schedules each mold needs. some molds need very little and some need a lot of heatwork. if you use both in the same load, will one be overfired and the other underfired?

it's probably soared because most of it comes from chinese sources, and they have stopped exporting so much raw materials as in the past.

Re: Finishing ~ Cold Working ~ Cerium Oxide

has anyone tried rouge (it comes in white, brown, green, and red) on a leather strop or belt? you don't use water with it, but charge the strop with the rouge. that's how they put mirror finishes on tooling, for instance, so should work well on glass.

you can get a hepa filter for the large shopvac, so there's no need to get another one.

Re: Glue for fused work

the question you should be asking: how can i do what i need to do without glue? since it burns off and the glass may move after that but before it is fused together, almost the only reason to use it is to transport the piece from workbench to the kiln.

Re: Sandblaster or WBS?

buy the tool that addresses the problems you are having, or what you want to do to the glass. these 2 tools don't have any overlapping capabilities, whereas a wbs and flat lap have some, making that decision a harder one. we can't answer your question because we don't know what problems you are havi...

Re: Molds to large for kiln?

the reason for the stilts is so that air can escape out the holes on the bottom low spots of the mold. you can use cut up pieces of ceramic tiles, which are usually only 1/4" thick, to get the same effect.

Re: Cause of blotches?

the board wasn't smooth. the hand sanding only hit the high spots. what is the backing of whatever you're sanding with? if it's not hard, then it's flexing over the high spots and skipping the low spots. you might try backing it with something hard, a piece of 2x4 or something, so you can get it eve...

this is b.e. steel blue. it's not devit, nor is it the thinfire. at the temps he's using, it's starting to develop the normal silvery gray coating that the steel blues (opal, transparent) develop. capping with clear is the solution.

Re: Does glass always need fire polishing when fused in a mo

firepolishing is to finish off the top surface, and goes anywhere from a matte surface to shiny. the bottom surface will pick up the texture of whatever it touches (mold, shelf, paper, etc), and you can't get rid of that without mechanical means.

would an ets stay hot enough for fusing temps? for your new house, look at passive solar heating panels. basically a box with a hole in the top and bottom of the back plate, painted black, with the face being glass. the holes in the back go into the space to be heated. the box heats up the air, crea...
